Just When We Thought He Was Out, He Could Be Back In!

2007_11_arodboras.jpgThe news that Stephon Marbury is heading back to the Knicks may be only the second-biggest reconciliation in New York sports this week. There are reports that Alex Rodriguez and the Yankees are talking again and discussing what it would take to bring Rodriguez back to the Yankees.

Apparently stung by the reaction to the timing of his opt-out, A-Rod has approached the Yankees and at least discussed the possibility of a new deal. The Yankees have insisted that Boras not be part of the negotiations with a source within the organization stating, “he cannot be in the room.” If he did return, A-Rod may have to give back the money the Yankees lost when he opted out, going against Scott Boras' advice like he did in 1996.

Before you go and retrieve your #13 jersey from the trash, keep in mind a couple of things. First, the Yankees can’t negotiate with A-Rod without Boras being present unless A-Rod fires Boras. And, free agents have had only 40 hours to receive monetary offers from other clubs, could A-Rod be giving up in his quest to receive $350 million so soon? The whole thing smells like an attempt to inflate A-Rod’s value on the market. Boras is known as a master manipulator and A-Rod is clearly not above cheap tricks, so believe any of this at your own risk, though it does appear that some form of meeting took place this afternoon.

Update: Alex has released a statement on his website which confirms the meeting and states that there will be further conversations between him and the Yankees.

Wait, this guy has his own MLB Backed website? That's atrocious (though, interesting that he has his own design and branding at the top).

Boras is a bad agent.

I thought the "cheap trick" link in the post was going to link to an article about that woman he was supposedly cheating on his wife with.

This would almost as big a deal as me breaking up with my girl this past Saturday before making up on Sunday.

remember this year when the yankees lost to Cleveland for the ALDS and the red sox won the world series?

i do. not that i am a red sox fan or anything.

Um, the Yankees are the ONLY team that can afford to pay A Rod what he wants. And by the look of things - giving 45 million to Mariano and 52 million to Jorge - the Yankees really don't care about money because, really, it's not theur money, it's your money and they will just raise teh ticket prices, raise teh concession prices, raise the cable TV prices and we will all pay for it! And they set payday precedents so that other clubs will have to pay outrageous sums to keep their players. And Yankee fans wonder why the Yankees are the most hated team in baseball and that Yankee fans are thought of as fat heads for supporting a team that that behaves so badly.

If they give that fuckhead 350 million dollars I'm going to set the building on fire.

I mean seriously. Fuck Scott Boras.

he's not a bad player, he's just not clutch

uh, dipshit #6, last time I checked, it was the F-ING TEXAS RANGERS who gave a-rod that monster contract, not the yankees. if a-rod comes back, he will be taking a pay cut in all likelyhood. yes, the yankees have the highest payroll in baseball, but thats because this is new york, not minesota. also, the most expensive place to see a game is Fenway, not in the Bronx. The other big market teams are closing the gap in terms of payroll (Boston, LA, Mets, SF). Also for the record, the yankees have NEVER been record setters in terms of individual contracts.

It should be noted that A-Rod's choice of top photo on his website is that of him in a Yankees uniform.

Everyone, calm down and think about who has been the public voice on this whole issue since Game 4 of the World Series. It's been Scott Boras, so eager for his percentage of a monster contract that he was willing to issue a statement during the World Fucking Series. We haven't heard much from Alex, beyond today's statement, so I think it's fair to assume that Scott Boras has been pulling the strings so far.

Alex is trying to do right by Yankee fans by going around his agent to at least have straight talks with Yankee management. Rather than allow this farce to continue to be played out in the press, Alex has done what is probably the first grown-up, mature thing he's done since coming to New York: he's owned up to the chaos and has held a tete-a-tete. This is a good thing, and after it, I can't believe that A-Rod now does not remain a Yankee.

Even if A-Rod takes a pay cut, the old contact had the Texas Rangers paying some of his contact. A new contract forces the Yankees (or ANY team) to pay 100%. He knew this, so how can he try to make things right now?
Still, whenever I watched post-season games in Fenway, I always noticed the scoreboard in the outfield with the final regular seasons result: Yankees were just 2 games behind Boston. Just a couple of games. Without A-Rod, what would have happened?

hey sp...check your figures. you remind me of jen carlson...

payroll

1 New York Yankees $195,229,045
2 Boston Red Sox $143,123,714
3 New York Mets $116,115,819
4 Chicago White Sox $109,290,167
5 Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim $109,251,333
6 Los Angeles Dodgers $108,704,524
7 Seattle Mariners $106,516,833
8 Chicago Cubs $99,936,999
9 Detroit Tigers $95,180,369
10 Baltimore Orioles

SF is not even in the top ten. What is wrong with you?

I like how people think that the largest metropolitan area should have a tiny payroll, equal to the Royals or the Marlins or something. That's just not logical.

Even if the Yankees didn't have the highest payroll people will still complain the Yankees buy their players because it's the YANKEES.

Love how the #1 market in the country and people expect the payroll to be like a small market team. Look at the Red Sox and Mets they're closing the gap on the Yankees.

What’s not to love about this???

Rodriguez gets to prove how much he wants to be on the team by putting his money where his mouth is, Boras gets booted out the door, and the Yanks come out of this smelling like a rose because they held fast and brought the best player in baseball back… at a discount.

I repeat… what’s not to love?

The '98-come-latelys will just have to find someone else to hate.

uh, dipshit #, last time I checked, it was the F-ING NEW YORK YANKEES who are going to give him the $275 over ten years! So please, shut the fuck up you lowlife Yankee fan!

Basically, baseball needs a salary cap. Until that time, the Yankees will be spending at least 1/3 more than any other team! That's right, they spent like $225 million to second place Boston's $150 million! And the seats are more expensive in Boston because you do not have nose bleed seat where you can see nothing! Until baseball gets a salary cap, the Yankees will continue to use the rest of baseball as theior farm system. It's sad. But if you believe that might makes right, then go ahead and continue supporting the Yankees, fat heads.

Except that $195,229,045 dopesn't include the $26 million or so teh Yankees wasted on fat ass chump Roger Clemens!

Steven you call a $50 million - $80 million dollar difference "closing the gap"? Only a Yankee fan would think so. Dunbass.

If you ran the Yankees you'd do the same thing. Spending money is a business decision for them. The value of the franchise has skyrocketed in the last decade and they're setting attendance records, building a new stadium, and have birthed a successful sports television network that is now worth billions. And it's all based on having a successful team. They COULD spend less, but by spending more they make more in the long run. I'm not saying it's a great situation for baseball, just that if your name was Steinbrenner you'd do exactly the same thing. If fans don't like it they should blame MLB for not having the balls to implement a salary cap. Hate the game, not the playa'.

BTW, the Red Sox could also spend less, but why would they? Invest in the team and there's more money to be made in the long run. They're just in the fortunate situation of having their high spending ways constantly overshadowed by the Yanks.

Meanwhile, I can't believe we can't get rid of this stupid prick A-Rod. He's "The Cooler." His teams don't win no matter how many RBI he has each year. He's just bad for the team. I hope he signs with Boston.

Ah, reality czech, resorting to childish name calling and outirght douchery yet again.

Even, when you try to make a valid argument, you miss your own point!

Seats are more expensive in fenway largely because they are at a premium. They will sell out and there are only 38, 805 seats(2nd smallest in the majors) to Yankee Stadium's 57,545.

Has reality Czech ever BEEN to Fenway?

I've gone 3 times. Sat behind a girder twice.

But, who needs facts when you can just spit vitriol.
