An Apocalyptic Manhattan Apartment

2007_11_manapoc1.jpg

2007_11_manapoc2.jpgNo, no these photos aren't models from I Am Legend's portrayal of Union Square, but an "Apocalyptic Manhattan" two guys constructed. They've recreated 50 Manhattan buildings (via MUG) in three rooms of their apartment. Perhaps the most impressive part of their Manhattan creation is the background wallpaper - complete with buildings, and clouds/smoke. While there's no mention of any specific neighborhood, the architecture makes it look like parts of Lower Manhattan despite the inclusion of a Ferris wheel and roller coaster.

One of the creators says that the buildings are all modeled "after Googled images" and that he scrapped the idea of an airplane hitting one of the buildings (as suggested by someone on the forum) "but scrapped the idea due to respect for 9/11." In mid-October, the project was still ongoing with finishing touches to be added - rubble, streets, building lighting, etc. The forum poster said seven people were working on the project 24/7 to finish it. While it should be finished by now, we haven't found images of the completed project yet.

All we know after looking at these images is that they must have a very forgiving landlord! That, and a very big apartment if they can spare three rooms for creating an apocalypse.

i remember going to detriot once and seeing trees growing on the tops of abandoned skyscrapers. don't know if things have changed since then but if not they should check out detroit for inspiration.

Looks like a set from "Heroes".
Way too much free time...

Umm, and this is noteworthy exactly how?

Two dudes make an awesome, city related art project. Why wouldn't that be noteworthy?

Guys are totally awesome!!! Are they going to exibit their creation somewhere?

I agree with Rocknrope, but why did these guys do this exactly?

For the same reason anyone does anything creative or artistic: because they want to

"They've recreated 50 Manhattan buildings (via MUG) in three rooms of their apartment. Perhaps the most impressive part of their Manhattan creation..."

...that these guys are using three rooms in a Manhattan apartment for this?

There's has to be a hidden story behind this. It has to be for a purpose. No one goes to this length and uses 3 rooms in an expensive NYC apartment unless they're independently wealthy or have a reason to do it.

Rocknrope,

Ugh, aren't people sick of zombies yet? I feel like everybody's spent an entire year obsessing over them!

Beyond that, this vaguely reminds me of the Viedt constructed apocolypse scene at the end of Watchmen. All it needs is a giant alien looking thing...

I can never get enough zombies, especially when they're done well. Unfortunately, most in the past year have been done poorly.
