Overdose at the Knitting Factory

200711phillipsn.jpgOver the weekend we pointed to a death at the Knitting Factory that the cops were deeming "suspicious." Yesterday it was announced that the man was Nicholas Phillips, an East Village resident. The Post reports:

An East Village man who died of an apparent drug overdose at a Manhattan rock club has been identified, sources said yesterday.

Nicholas Phillips, of East Ninth Street, was found unconscious in the bathroom of the Knitting Factory on Leonard Street at around 2:40 a.m. Sunday.

Phillips, who worked as a stagehand for one of the bands performing at the club, could not be revived and was pronounced dead about a half an hour later.

Sources said he had a small puncture wound in his right forearm.

Brooklyn Vegan points out that his MySpace page stated, "Seriously if I don't Know you leave me alone. I'm not much of a people person," and the 28-year-old apparently overdosed while at a show that night. In 2001 the NY Times had an article on the rise of overdoses and drug use in clubs and venues and law enforcement and government agencies targeting the clubs themselves. The article stated "fans of the music, nightclub owners and some civil rights lawyers say singling out clubs based on the music they play raises First Amendment concerns." Not to mention it would be very difficult for each concert and club-goer to be thoroughly searched prior to entering the establishments around town.

The Knitting Factory seems like kind of a lame place to overdose in.

By including the Myspace quote, you're suggesting that all loners are drug abusers, and that people are completely serious in the "About me" section.

I think I met this kid a couple times. he's been a roadie for a lot of bands I think. Got fired from some gig for smoking pot with Willie Nelson, which is worth it really. Nightclub bathrooms are gross places and always a terrible place to die.

I'm glad to see that heroin is not as passe as people may have thought.

1.
I'm just glad Rudy Giuliani "cleaned up" NYC (which means Heroin use exploded under his "iron fist"), just as he stopped crack and murder during the 1980s when he was in charge of the War on Drugs at Reagan's Justice Dept.

You do remember how crack and murder disappeared in the 1980s and 1990s thanks to superhero Rudy, right? There were like, no murders in the USA when Rudy ran the drug war. Yeah?

(Oh wait, we saw the largest increase in murder and crack ever. So, WHY doesn't the media mention any of this when discussing our next President? Now search Gothamist's archives and see how many times THEY wrote about it!)

2.
This reminds me of supercriminals Rudy and Tax Hike Mike Bloomberg going after SMALL clubs for drug use, while looking the other way at drug use at Madison Square Garden and other large venues that hosted shows with tons of drugs.

More proof that Rudy and Mike belong in prison, for this clearly violates the Equal Protection clause of the Bill of Rights. But our mayor need not obey the constitution.

Well, that's what 100% of the media told me.

(Check the Gothamist archives for how often they mention that Bloomberg is a convicted criminal, busted by judges and juries for violating The Constitution!)

East Village? So I take it his apartment is available now.

The Equal Protection Clause is part of the 14th Amendment, 4 amendments removed from the Bill of Rights.

But yeah, people seem to ignore how Giuliani is a horrible leader and seems to be incompetent when it comes to major issues.

Did he stick himself in that lovely green tattoo?

Is this really news?

Seriously, people must die from drug overdoses everyday.

And, not that he cares, but why make a public display of this guys embarrassing death. And posting a picture only adds insult to injury.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again, as editor, Jen Chung should really keep a closer eye on the CRAP that Jen Carlson posts. Most, but not all, of her hipster gossip should never see the light of day.

i want to read a story about a 21 year old who falls in love with a woman across the country using AIM. and i want it to be complete with a totally awesome soundtrack. and i want to be able to read about it on gothamist on my iphone.

jen you think you could whip that up for me?

actually scratch and make it with vimeo messages. that would appeal more to my youthful demographic.

@matty

I'm a 29 year old who fell in love with a woman across the ocean (in Paris) using MSN, and I listened to lots of totally awesome music during that time, and she moved to the US and now we live together.

And now you can read about it on Gothamist. On your iPhone. In the form of this very comment.

We're not hipsters, though, so I don't think our story's got legs.

i'm calling good morning america as i type this.

I'm calling Good Morning America to see if they'll investigate what the heck that picture is of matty's avatar.

It's Psychrolutes marcidus, the aptly named Blobfish or Blob Sculpin.

you know, i was at that show and my roommate was in the bathroom when they found homey dead. it was a brand nubian show with curious george (first show in 12 years?) and the meter maids (who are pretty damn good actually), and apparently, i never knew this, but nothing goes with some sweet old school hiphop like hard drugs.
I'm gonna go see the metermaids open up for louis logic on the 29th for sure, but this time i'm gonna score some horse first and boot up. I gotta see what i've been missing all these years only smoking pot and getting drunk at concerts. I feel like an idiot for missing out on this apparantly unbeatable sensory combination.
