Last Night's Action: Nets Hit a Wall

  • Celtics 112, Nets 101: Early indications have the road to the NBA Finals going through Boston. If the Nets entertain any hopes of becoming a legit contender, they'll have to find a better measuring stick. As if the Nets didn't have enough concerns about Vince Carter, their star left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury. At least he had 17 points when he left. Beating up on the Eastern Conference may not prove anything, but if it does, it proves the unbeaten Celtics are legit.

  • Rangers 3, Maple Leafs 2 (SO): The Rangers do have a backup goalie, and his name is Steve Valiquette. He made 32 saves and came up big in the shootout in this annual Hall of Fame game. Henrik Lundqvist got a well-deserved break -- he had played every minute of the Rangers' 16 previous games this season -- and his teammates didn't miss him. Goals from Brendan Shanahan and Sean Avery before Marcel Hossa helped the Rangers bag their first road win this season.

  • Islanders 2, Devils 1: All those Satan beats Devils jokes can be made, but the more important story is the play of the Islanders. Miroslav Satan has scored three straight game-winning goals, and his team has won four straight. The Isles have to hope that Bill Guerin's eye injury isn't that serious.
