Assistant Arrested in Linda Stein Murder Case
There's finally been an arrest in the murder of Linda Stein. Yesterday it was reported that the police were interested in re-interviewing Stein's assistant, Brooklyn resident Natavia Lowery, who has a shady past involving identity theft. So it's not all that surprising that today the NYPD announced Lowery has been taken into custody. They found the 26-year old in Virginia Beach, apparently visiting her boyfriend.
Police spokesman Paul Browne said Lowery "made statements implicating herself" in the killing. Lowery was taken to the 7th Precinct in Manhattan.Those financial details? Stein "trusted Lowery with her big bucks celebrity clients' financial secrets, including Social Security and bank account numbers." Stein, as most people in Lowery's life, was unaware of her previous arrest. As for why she did it, The Times reports the assistant claimed Ms. Stein “just kept yelling at her," and not just that day, the battle was apparently ongoing.Sources said Stein hired Lowery in early summer after firing her previous personal assistant. Stein, an old-school style realtor, conducted most of her business through personal contacts and lunch and dinner meetings.
Lowery handled the computer work, setting up appointments and handling some of the financial details.
Update: Police Commissioner Ray Kelly gave a press conference. According to Newsday, he revealed that "Lowery told detectives that Stein was 'verbally abusive' to her the day of the murder, using profanity and derogatory language." Plus: "She also said Stein blew marijuana smoke in her face before she snapped and hit Stein six or seven times with a yoga stick, Kelly said." Um, what exactly is a yoga stick? Besides being a murder weapon.

I don't think anyone thought Linda Stein was necessarily a saint - they described her as being brash, pushy, being a real character, etc. That said, there are tons of arguments that *don't* lead to murders.
Perhaps some good will come of this, and people with personalities like this will think twice before verbally terrorizing their workers.

What we have here is a grifter, a con, a person who commits petty (or maybe not so petty) financial scams - using her "friend's" ID no less.
So, basically she is scum and should have been arrested already.
As another poster points out (but fails to think through) that this person murdered her boss instead of quitting. Maybe it was not that Linda Stein was such a witch or that she “yelled at” her, but the fear of exposure that would loose her this job and any future jobs as well. Odds are, given her predilection for petty financial crimes, that Ms. Lowery had her fingers in that big cookie jar sitting on her desk at work – the computer with the client’s financial information. Maybe Ms. Stein is on to that – hummm?
Or maybe it’s just a case of being a scumbag criminal creep with a screw loose – just a thought.

Seriously, what kind of name is Natavia? This is another one of those "America's Next Top Model" names-- no one knows where it came from or half the time, how to pronounce it.

Moral of the story? If you're going to hire someone for a job involving access to money or to sensitive information (e.g. clint bank account numbers), do a background check first!
employers have the Federal right to do background searches on their employees, with consent. However, if you deny consent, very often you're denied the job. If you have nothing to hide, then consent.

Most brokers are jerks. NYC attracts and rewards jerks, by paying them a lot of money. People who don't enjoy living with, working for, or waiting on jerks structure their lives in such a way that minimizes contact with them. It often means less money, but it feels a whole lot bettter.
People who want to work for jerks, because of the money, should not be shocked when they aren't treated with kindness. This is naive. They also should not kill them, and then complain that they weren't treated nicely. This make them not only jerks themselves, but naive, whining, scheming murderers.
Of course, that's just a theory.

I posted that Natavia Lowery is black because someone asked what like of name is that though I would have thought that was obvious.
I don't see this as a black/jewish thing more like a person who already had what I shall call boundary problems with other people's money being in the employ of a brash wealthy person - worlds collide kind of thing.

It's ingenuous to ignore the culture clash. The style of Linda Stein is all too familiar to people who live in New York, including Jews. "At Ms. Lowery’s arraignment last night, an assistant district attorney, Shanda Strain, said that after the killing, Ms. Lowery used Ms. Stein’s A.T.M. card to withdraw $800."
NOW, do you think the poor little abused assitant gave Ms. Stein what she had coming to her? I think that we will find that that is not the only financial shenanigans that Ms. Lowery was up to. I think the stuff about pot smoke in her face is crap (culled from stories over the last few days about Ms. Stein's habits and designed to make her look bad). I quit.
Later, I find out that he died in the office during one of his rant and rave sessions. Sounds like that's what would have happened to Stein as well.
I didn't need the wear and tear on my nerves, nor the record, so I did the best thing - walked out.
Too bad the young lady didn't see it that way.
