Rental Truck Explodes, Leaky Barbecue May Be Culprit

2007_11_avistruck.jpgAn Avis truck exploded at 64th Road and 108th Street in Queens, injuring one person and damaging windows in surrounding buildings. The box truck was parked behind some businesses and blew up around 8AM.

At first, residents were concerned it might be some sort of attack, but it seems that a propane gas-barbecue inside the truck ignited, causing the explosion. And authorities say the vehicle was a catering truck. WCBS 2 has video of the scene, which brought a big FDNY and NYPD response.

According to the National Propane Gas Association, you shouldn't leave propane tanks in vehicles.

Presumably, you mean a grill, not a "barbecue". One creates barbecue by cooking meat at low temperatures in a smoker. A grill is what one uses to grill things.

Barbecue, used as a noun, either means slow-smoked meat, or an event at which such slow-smoked meat is unveiled and served. An event at which one is grilling things is not a "barbecue". Neither is a grill.

This is an extremely straightforward concept, yet baffling to many. Pay attention, people.

So, beyond the obvious reason of not storing what essentially is an oversized grenade in your car, why should you not keep a propane tank in an automobile? Is there any more danger of it igniting in a car than outside your garage?

And Phineas, I know what you're saying and as a cook I agree, but most people don't give two shits about this distinction.

At least it wasn't a Yellow Ryder truck!

I love it how the first conclusion people jump to every time shit blows up is that it's "some sort of attack". As if FUCKING QUEENS at 64th Road and 108th Street was some kind of target. SHEEP. Americans are fearful sheep. You are more likely to slip and die in your bathroom than to be "attacked" by "terrorists" IN FUCKING QUEENS! WAKE UP PEOPLE!
