Quick Hits: No Love For Newark; Gold Gloves; Cabrera?

  • If Barry Melrose ever goes to Newark, he probably won't be getting a warm reception. Melrose, a hockey analyst for ESPN and a former player and manager, said some disparaging words about the city of Newark when talking about the new Devils arena on his webcast last week. Melrose said, "It looks great on the inside but don't go outside, especially if you got a wallet or anything else because the area around the building is awful. It's so different the inside and the outside where its built, it's pretty humorous."

Naturally, city and state officials were offended by the comments. Newark Mayor Cory Booker said, "It shows extreme ignorance and the comments are utterly absurd. This guy doesn't know Newark. He hasn't visited the city recently." While Melrose later apologized to the city, state, and Devils, the best quote comes from Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek. "I think its an incredibly uneducated statement for someone who hasn't been here. It's like me saying I know what it's like to wear a mullet [Melrose's hairstyle of choice]."

  • David Wright and Carlos Beltran are golden. The Mets 3rd baseman and center fielder were selected to the 51st Gold Glove team yesterday for their accomplishments on defense. It was Wright's first Gold Glove and Beltran's 2nd in a row. The two were selected by National League coaches and managers. In the American League, Derek Jeter was unseated at shortstop by Orlando Cabrera on the Angels. Jeter had won three Gold Gloves in a row.
  • Speaking of the Yankees, it looks like there's another big name 3rd baseman on the market. The Florida Marlins might be using Miguel Cabrera as trade bait and the Yankees may be willing to take a nibble. The only problem is that the Marlins want more than the Yankees are willing to offer. Reports say that the Marlins want either Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain or Ian Kennedy. And an informal survey finds that the Alex Rodriguez sweepstakes has very few players.

Is it possible that Boras gets no offers for ARod?
And, if that happens, do the Yankees get him back?
Does the old contract hold, salary-wise?
I'd sure like to see an incentive-based contract that stipulates no income if he fails to produce in the post-season.

Joba, Hughes or Kennedy? I don't think so.

If the asking price for A-Rod's services are too high for any team, then he should be forced to take whatever he gets at any other sport, like jai alai. Lets see how he does there...

I swear to the Almighty, if they trade any of those fantastic young pitchers for Miguel Cabron, I'm going to go up to the Bronx and kick some Steinbrenner ass. Brooklyn style.

Also, I think that Boras just hit the point of the story where the farmer cuts open the goose laying the golden eggs, only to find regular goose innards. He gave his client bad advice - there's no point in blaming it on the Yankees this time.

As we say in the bleachers, "YOU FUCKED UP!"

"Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain or Ian Kennedy"

Hell to the No.

I'd take Cabrera for Tyler Clippard, Matt DeSalvo, or Chase Wright...

If A Rod doesn't receive an offer he will accept he most certainly does NOT go back to the Yankees. He goes to the golf course. His previous contract is over and the Texas Rangers are pretty psyched about it.

If Cashman thinks he's getting Cabrera without giving up one of those three guys in return he's utterly insane.

I'm also not surprised there are so few players to the A-Rod sweepstakes... especially with Cabrera becoming available. Everyone seems to forget that the guy who gave him the $250M contract is legitimately batshit crazy.

Of course Boras got Barry Zito well more than Zito had any right to get, so who knows.

Well if things don't plan out the way Boras is thinking, A-Rod could always become a little league coach in the Dominican Republic. I know he has big following back in the "old country."

Who might I ask has the money to support his demands? If the Yankees take him back no one is going to love the guy even if he performs well. I hate to say it but it looks like greed just f... up a great career.
