Last Night's Action: Settling It on the Court

2006_11_sknickslogo.jpg

  • Knicks 119, Nuggets 112: Isiah Thomas had his Knicks go toe-to-toe with the high-flying Nuggets, and they came out on top despite trailing by 15. Don't look now, but Thomas may have made a smart move in acquiring Zach Randolph. Eddy Curry is still overweight and Renaldo Balkman was still taken too early, but the Knicks put on quite a show for the Garden fans. And it didn't involve the fisticuffs of last season's brawl. They host Orlando on Friday.

  • Nets 87, Hawks 82: Vince Carter doesn't look like Vince Carter, but the Nets still had enough to get past the lowly Hawks Carter's still recovering from a knee injury, so he and his teammates no doubt hope it's just a matter of time. Jason Kidd almost added another triple-double and Richard Jefferson had 25 points. The Nets get the Wizards on Thursday night.

  • Islanders 3, Rangers 2: Everything looked so good for the Rangers through two periods. They clearly forgot there was a third. The insurgents from Long Island rallied with three goals in the final session to stun the Rangers and end a four-game winning streak. Miroslav Satan and his game-winner were the biggest reason. All the goals came in the first 11 minutes, 12 seconds of the period.

"The insurgents from Long Island"? You make them sound like Terrorists.....terrorists who have not only beaten the Rangers twice this season, but are also tied for first place (and in third place in the conference).

Again, I understand the Islanders aren't preferred in this sports column, but after a month, it's about time their accomplishments get recognized.

The Rangers played an excellent game (Paul Mara's goal was teh perfect play), but Isles bested them again. The Isles are proving to be a very strong, and complete team.

Balkman = The Catalyst

Hopefully this is the beginning of something good...let's all repeat the sacred mantra,"no injuries, no injuries, no injuries, no injuries, ooooohhhhmmmmmmmm..."

@EricGewiz:

Maybe he meant "resurgent." If that's so, it's perhaps the best malapropism this Rangers fan could ask for.

bxbrian:

Maybe, but on paper, these teams shoudl be very different. Henrik is doing well, but his high-powered offense shoudl be scoring at least 3-5 goals a game; he has no help.

In any case, "resurgent" would imply that the Isles at one point had not been playign well. They have own 5 of their last 6. Quite strong, as opposed to "resurgent". What did they "resurge" from?

Yeah the Rangers have got to get their act together, no doubt about it. And I for one didn't see the Isles doing as well as they are, after losing so many key players to free agency--I'm stunned and more than a little jealous.

As for the resurgency, I'm not so sure--perhaps the tough post-season exit? Maybe the forecasting of a weak Isles crew before the season started? Good question: I just wanted to drop the idea in that Boorstein needs a dictionary, and that your team isn't detonating IEDs on the LIE.

What the Isles benefit from is a solid, complete team. They've been getting lots of scoring from D-men; and their lines have all been contributing.

I think the Rangers were a bit unbalanced from teh start this season, and it's starting to show (I figured Drury, who can pick the puck up in front of the net for goals) would have more than 3 goals this season.

'Tis a long season, but things have settled interestingly.

Be an Islander fan (and an Islander natively, though not now...), I'm hoping the LIE is not as dangerous as that!

"Ronaldo Balkman was still taken too early"

Looking back at that draft, who would you rather have picked? In hindsight? Josh Boone and Marcus Williams sure aren't doing much in Jersey. If that draft was held again today, he'd be a top 10 pick in a fairly deep draft. Can't complain about getting a solid rotation guy with the 20 pick. It's the mentality that you've gotta draft a star with every pick which gets teams like the Knicks into trouble. Hated many of his decisions, but gotta give Isiah credit for ignoring all the draft hype and finding a player who actually can play in the NBA.
