Searching for Clues in the Linda Stein Case

200711lstein.jpgThe NY Post has two reports regarding the ongoing investigation of Linda Stein's death. Yesterday the police removed a section of her door in an attempt to get some new clues in the week old case, the frame (which is metal) may hold fingerprints. They also removed part of her bathtub drain and pipe (did the killer wash his/her hands?).

Investigators are saying it could possibly be a "crime of passion" because of how she was killed. To recap, Stein's head and neck were bludgeoned with an unknown, jagged object. No suspects have been named as of yet, but it seems that Stein's former lover, Francisco Arena, and Raul Diaz-Bernal are in the clear for now after being questioned (as both still held keys to her apartment). Though both had recent tension with Stein, neither showed up on the security tapes from the building on the day of the murder.

One person who was definitely in the building and apartment was her younger daughter, Mandy, who found her body. The Daily News explores the idea of Mandy Stein as suspect, but her lawyer says she has an alibi. She met with investigators for two hours this past Saturday - and ran the NYC marathon on Sunday. She seems an unlikely suspect, as she was at a business meeting and wearing the same clothes all day - with no blood found on her.

Also suspected is a construction worker with a burglary record and a swollen hand. The NY Sun reports that Stein was upset about construction work: "During a meeting at her apartment days before she was killed, Stein, 62, shouted at the superintendent of her building, Edmond McQuaid, because of the damage that the roof repairs had caused to her 18th floor apartment, a source close to Stein said." Apparently there were cracks and leaks in her apartment from the work.

As far as any clues Stein herself may have left behind, her emails only turned up business dealings, and police have yet to find her will.

it prob was self defense,
heres a likely scenario

she thinks shes still hot shit

makes moves on a mexican roofer

roofer rejects her advances

she goes apeshit since shes used to getting her way all the time

looney rich lady who thinks shes so special decides to throw a tantrum and picks up a heavy object, throws it at mexican laborer

mexican throws heavy object at crazy weed addicted looney rich lady who thinks she still has sex appeal

stooped self centered realestate vampire drops dead instantly from blow to head

mexican picks up object leaves apt and goes back to work

case closed!

Although some of the details might need correction, I think you are right Mike.

Is this a repeat of last year's murder in the Village?

Somehow older Jewish women don't understand that immigrant laborers don't put up with their loud mouthed bullshit. Women in Mexico are suppose to stay in the kitchen and walk several steps behind their husband. Is that such a hard concept to deal with?

I'm having a hard time reconciling this picture of her with her reputation as a flamboyant mini skirted punk. She looks like somebody's grandmother here.

yeah we might have to add pedro decided to bash her skull in from behind to ensure that crazy lady stop making kissey face...

he may have also tried to write a suicide note on her behalf, but realized that it really wasnt convincing

'...me no likes dis lif anymoor and hoy is a good day to say adios to el mundo...eye hit mi cabeza on de seenk mucho...'

great merger - you two are even less funny together than apart, and that's what teamwork is all about!

Where's the hide guest comments button?

"Hi you must be the lady with the cracks in the ceiling. Can you show me where the damage is? Oh I'm very sorry BAMMM!!! I need a total renovation of my unit because I want to sell it and retire in Miami and have money left over for some hot young babes. And I won't let you stand in my way!"

do you think the daughter or her partner could have done it to get her money? I know it's a cruel idea, but makes sense right?

Since out right robbery wasn't the issue. And there appears to be no suspicious characters entering the building according to the video tapes. And the two elevators are operated by humans. And as reported there are no hallways. Actually there has to be a hallway because a fire stair would be needed. So we amateur detectives are not getting the full details.

I would say that one of the roofers did it with a two by four, or some framing they ripped up, when she confronted him about some crack or noise or who knows what.

I assume that the elevator didn't go to the roof, even if it did, there had to be some access from her floor to the roof, either a stairway or a ladder to a roof scuttle. She bitches to the roofers and one of the guys come down to see what her upteenth complaint was for that day and popped her. End of story.

It seems from related stories that she had a combative (albeit some called it a competitive) attitude and liked dueling with people. Well this time she lost.

My money is on the immigrant roofers. How convenient to get rid of the "weapon" in a pile of stripped tar paper and other construction debris.
