Yesterday, as many respectfully cheered on the marathon participants, a skateboarder ran directly into a wheelchair racer in Park Slope.

Was it intentional? Witnesses say it was. From this Flickr thread:
He came riding in from the side and didn't even try to stop himself. As soon as he stood up, he was smirking and after the NYPD yelled at him, when he retrieved his skateboard and walked up the block towards where I was standing, he was grinning and mouthing off to people as he walked past.Full set of photos here. Let the skater-hating begin...

I don't know. Based on four photos it's pretty hard to conclude that the skater deliberately ran into the wheelchair racer. The skater would have nothing to gain by doing so, as he probably would've been at greater risk of injury than the man in the wheelchair. My guess is that he was being careless but not deliberately malicious.
lol
Damn skateboarders. Don't they know how to stay out of people's way. The cops should have shot out his tires, that would have taught him a lesson.
The cops don't look like real cops, are they auxiliary or traffic cops? The guy isn't wearing a helmet and he looks like a hipster. Shouldn't he have been arrested for those two infractions of decency?
Peter, you're joking, right? Anyone who's watched the marathon knows that there is plenty of time to cross the road, if that is indeed his goal, when the wheelchair racers go by, as there aren't that many of them. Hell, you can just see by the photos that the road is pretty damn open.
I think it's clear that his intention was to be an asshole. Mission accomplished.
hm...he kind of looks like a friend of mine, but i dont know what he'd be doing in park slope.
Unapologetically hitting a wheelchair with your skateboard pretty much defines "asshole".
Wow, what a cool guy. Er...not.
I think skater boy needs to meet up with the guys in wheelchairs from "Murderball."
Jerk! He could have waited for the wheelchairs to pass before he decided to cross, otherwise it looks intentional. BTW, so many people were crossing in front of the runners yesterday at the most inappropriate times that I am surprised more people weren't hurt.
You people are way too harsh on the guy. It was in Park Slope and he was trying to pass a group of strollers that were blocking the side walk and he lost control after he jumped the curb to avoid hitting a dogwalker with a handful of lap dogs.
The reason he was smiling was because he was happy that he didn't hurt anyone seriously.
Give the guy a break. If it was any different the "cops" would have arrested him.
Rocknrope is right: that street is empty. that skateboarder is a scumbag
Snoopy, Couldn't he just wait for a better time or (gasp!) just Walked???
Regardless of Intent, the guy's a Boob to say the least.
Yeah, these disabled people get everything! Let's bother them after they've worked so hard to train for this race! YEAH!
The skater's a douchebag. The street is wide open.
Adult skaters are so fucking rad! YEAHHH DUDE!
Skateboarders are into that whole F.U. vibe anyway. They think they're so rebellious by pissing off everybody else. They don't care. All that matters is that they stick it to "the man." Even if the man didn't do anything to them.
Skateboarders are too much tuned into Beastie Boy retro stuff. They wouldn't hear anything that made like an awareness sound. The guy was fine, and the dude he crashed into was fine so where's the problem man?
Cool dude and keep on doing it.
It's not the like the guy in the wheelchair could feel anything.
I know the guy. The whole thing was an accident. Longboards can pick up quite a bit of speed. He didn't see the racers until it was too late and didn't have enough time to react. The lot of you need to relax. Furthermore, if you read all the comments from the original flickr threads, you'll notice that the woman gothamist quotes is quite crazed and insistent that she knows the whole story and the motives of the offender... simply because she stood by and took a few photos? hmmm. Bravo, gothamist.
