Will Rififi Be the Next Venue Casualty?

200711rififisale.jpgA few days ago The Apiary suspected that someone was out to get Rififi after reading some new comments on an old post about the multi-purpose venue, and hearing their liquor license was about to expire. One of the managers, Karin Stanley, quickly responded -- confirming the site's suspicions:

Unfortunately you are correct, there is a smear campaign being perpetrated against Rififi by some of the tenants in the surrounding buildings. They are intent on ousting Rififi during this period of license renewal, soliciting surrounding tenants to make complaints, abusing the SLA complaint webpage, and invoking archaic and racist cabaret laws (please refer to this site for a history of the cabaret laws in New York City). Many of these people seem to believe it is illegal for people to eat, drink and make merry.

Rififi seeks to nurture a copacetic relationship with our community and many tenants who live in the very same buildings as our opponents attend our shows, patronize Rififi on the weekends and are keeping us up to date in the neighbors efforts to taint the police and SLA against us. There is also talk of a luxury highrise building being erected across the street and this campaign may well be an effort to cleanse the block of 'undesirable' business.

Earlier this year, in January, undercover cops busted Rififi and mounted police showed up to "control the crowd" (detailed report here). In April, the venue was up for sale with a listing on Craigslist, and even though Stanley stated that they plan to stay open, we wonder if it'll go the way of Mo' Pitkins. She did state the future was uncertain -- and it's still listed at $300K on the Buchbinder & Warren Realty Group site.

I liked it best when it was Cinema Classics.

300k for a storefront in nyc? wow. wow. wow. wow.

buy buy buy buy. i wonder if it comes with the liquor license. I highly doubt it.

that's really sad...Brownies RIP...Fez RIP...Sin-e RIP...Tonic RIP...CBGBs RIP...Northsix RIP...I could go on. Don't some of these places qualify as Landmarks that need preserving? It's sad.

nyc is dying before our eyes.

While Rififi had great burlesque shows, the place stinks of rodent droppings, the bartenders could be unpleasant, and the snotty condescending doorman treated EVERYONE like jerks. I'm sure he actually caused or aggravated some of the sidewalk crowd problems.

Not surprised the place is closing.

Waaaaa .... new york isn't what it used to be. I'm so cool, I like to talk about how great new york was back in the day. Waaaa gentrification, I miss the CBGB urine pit.

Change = progress. Feel free to have a glass of STFU. Enjoy Bushwick!! I hear the 8th stop on the L is lovely. losers

change doesn't always mean progress.

the only people calling the Waaaaaambulance here are the people on the block complaining. If you can't hack it, why would you bother living in the city?

this sucks. their friday night comedy show is by far my favorite weekly event in the city (hey! come tonight and see john mulaney!)

wait. you left out the first two paragraphs of the letter...

The license situation is an easy one. Every liquor license for all bars and clubs expire every two years. The renewal process is simple and quick and must be undertaken every two years, it's a checks and balances system. Rififi's license has been renewed and we plan on continuing to bring you the best comedy shows in the Village.

thanks for getting some people freaked out for seemingly absolutely no reason.
