FAIR: Attention vinyl junkies! WFMU is hosting their Record Fair starting this eve and running throughout the weekend. "Hundreds of dealers specializing in the out sounds that WFMU is adored for delivering year round will gather for three days of merciless hawking o' the wax, and thousands of area music geeks are already trembling with nervous anticipation!" There will also be live performances this year, check out more details here.
Friday, 7pm to 10pm and Saturday and Sunday 10am to 7pm // 125 W 18th St // $6
THEATER: As if to shame “blocked” writers everywhere, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks (Topdog/Underdog) spent 2002/2003 cranking out a play a day for 365 days. For the past year, theater companies across America have taken turns mounting seven of ‘em a week. As we enter week 51 of the festival, Parks’s baton is passed to Pig Iron, a hot Philly-based theater gang that places a special emphasis on physicality in performance. They will be joined by the enchanting musician/singer/playwright/actor Cynthia Hopkins, who contributes her signature haunting aural accompaniment. (Ends Saturday.) – John Del Signore
Friday // 7pm // The Brick Theater [575 Metropolitan Ave, Williamsburg] // $10 suggested donation; call (215) 627-1883 for reservations.
SCIENCE: Union Hall never ceases to amaze us -- tonight they're having a taxidermy contest! Their Secret Science Club is bringing the 3rd annual Carnivorous Nights to the venue, and you can expect to see plenty of jarred, stuffed and preserved dead things. A winner will be named by the judges who include an expert from the American Museum of Natural History and the Minnesota Association of Rogue Taxidermists. Taxidermy lectures, and theme drinks (gross) will be served up as well.
Friday // 7:30pm // Union Hall [702 Union St, Park Slope] // Free
MUSIC: One of our favorite acts of CMJ this year was The Jealous Girlfriends, and lucky us -- they're playing tonight! Head over to Club Midway where they'll be sharing a late bill with The Sister Lovers. C'mon, it's not like you have to work tomorrow.
Friday // 11:30pm // Club Midway // $5
THEATER: The weeks leading up to the ‘94 Rwanda genocide have been harrowingly depicted in J.T. Rogers’s meticulously researched play The Overwhelming, which views the looming catastrophe through the eyes of an American professor in country to write a book about a doctor who treats H.I.V.-infected children. Trustworthy Time Out NY theater critic David Cote has championed the play in print and on his blog: “Thrilling... In a theater scene virtually devoid of serious political drama comes this bracing, skillful, scrupulously researched portrait of Americans abroad getting a brutal lesson in history and geopolitics.” – John Del Signore
Saturday // 2pm & 7:30pm // Laura Pels Theater [111 W 46th St] // Ticket prices vary.
EVENT: Get ready to take over BAM this weekend as the established establishment lets the rock bands rock out as a part of their Takover Bam festival. The one-night-only fiesta will feature: Antibalas, Be Your Own Pet, The Exit, Heartless Bastards, and Dirty On Purpose. On the big screen there will be everything from a Lindsay Lohan Mid-Career Retrospective (for real) to Ziggy Stardust and the Spider from Mars to "When Animals Hug" -- a series of shorts starring animals. Expect to dance to whatever deejays from Ubiquita NYC spin, and take a look at the art installations throughout the building while you're at it.
Saturday // 9pm to 4am // BAM [30 Lafayette Ave] // $15adv/$20dos
MOVIE: Pay homage to the late Tony Wilson, as he's portrayed by Steve Coogan, in 24-Hour Party People. An instant classic upon its release in 2002, you'll learn about the rise and fall of Factory Records, and much more about that scene back in the day.
Saturday>Sunday // Midnight // Sunshine Cinema [141-143 E Houston St] // $10.75
ART: Take a Sunday stroll through some open studios in Bushwick as 269 Meserole opens their doors to one and all. Come check out the work and space of many local artists with your very own eyes.
