200711riley.jpgART: Duke Riley brings his latest exhibit, After the Battle of Brooklyn: East River Incognita II, to Magnan Projects. Starting tonight and showing through December 22nd, the works imagine New York during the Revolutionary War and "interweave historical and contemporary events with elements of fiction and myth to create allegorical histories. His re-imagined narratives comment on a range of issues from the cultural impact of overdevelopment and gentrification of waterfront communities to contradictions within political ideologies as well as commerce and the role of the artist in society and at war."

THEATER: Composer/theatre artist John Moran and Japanese dancer/choreographer Saori Tsukada have collaborated on a new work that explores the the dynamic between American and Japanese culture; it’s described as “Teletubbies on acid.” What more do you need to hear? Called What if Saori Had a Party?, the multimedia mash-up shoves Saori, the host of a kids’ cartoon show, into a surreal “bubble” world of digitized 3D animation, disembodied voices and Moran’s deluxe ambient soundtrack, which at times boasts 300 different sound effects per minute. Alexis Soloski, writing for The Village Voice, seemed impressed: “Tsukada's gyrations, Moran's thorny score, and the air of candy-colored dread – what a swell party this is.” – John Del Signore
