JFK Security Breacher Went Outside to Smoke

2007_10_smoking.jpgThe man who breached security at JFK Airport on Tuesday, after entering the restricted areas by walking through the exit lane near security screening and caused two terminals to be evacuated as the TSA and other authorities searched for him, was arrested yesterday in Albany. Authorities say that William Contreras Ramos, who managed to board his plane to the state capitol, had a 4-inch razor in his carry-on bag and was charged with carrying a concealed weapon onto a plane.

Ramos had a layover at JFK Airport on his way from Puerto Rico. According to the Times-Union, Ramos went outside to smoke.

Ramos admitted that while he was smoking the cigarette he noticed he was running late for his connecting flight and did not have his boarding pass. He "went through a door opened by a man and ran to the gate where he boarded the flight," the court documents say, despite verbal warnings to stop.
Okay, so even without his boarding pass, he got onto his flight. Nice one, Delta. Also, good one Puerto Rican airport security, as the straight razor in his carry-on apparently made it through the PR screening.

According to the Transportation Security Administration, the terminals were evacuated at 6:40PM. Flights were delayed and passengers were re-screened starting at 9:30PM.

JFK airport is the WORST.

JFK is not so bad. The TSA is just staffed by a bunch of idiots.

So, did he actually do anything other than freak people out?

All this stuff at airports is a joke.

Something tells me taking your shoes off at check in isn't working the way it should be.

Great interception by security. Do they play defense for the Jets on their off hours?

He should serve time in jail equal to the passenger's hours that were lost because of his stupid move.

bah, he didnt do anything more than embarrass the TSA. For this he will be punished, but i believe unfairly. The people who should be punished are the morons at the DHS and TSA who are completely incompetent at what they do, and who routinely abuse people while being so incompetent.

Exactly!

I think the whole group working at the gates are racists. How many of them are white? How many of them speak English as their native tongue? Ebonics is not English although some think it should be recognized as a dialect of English.

I'm not surprised on the miss at the Puerto Rican airport. This summer, coming back to New York I was forced to leave my small bottle of foundation after it was noticed on the x-ray machine, but "thankfully" they let me bring onboard a 4 pound rock bigger than my hand.

I wouldn't call them racist just because many are not white. You should back up statements like those.

Unfortunatley, the pay structure of TSA Agents does not attract, smarter, more professional employees.

JFK needs to have a smoking section INSIDE the terminal...i've seen so many people complain about having to re-enter security just to go out and get some fresh air

a few airports already have this (e.g. Miami, St.Louis and practically every Asian and European airport)

Carcinogen-laden tobacco smoke is "fresh air" now? Who knew?

Last month, after passing through JFK Terminal 4 security, I was amused to find an untended cart with four large clear trash bags containing confiscated bottles and other prohibited items. I was almost tempted to grab a couple of tubes of Tom's of Maine toothpaste.

Which brings me to another rant: the consumer products industry is (intentionally?) not packaging toiletries in 3 ounce containers, the TSA limit. It's really quite annoying. How long have these rules been in effect?

Landor,

If I recall, those rules were implemented right before Thanksgiving last year after an apparent attack plan involving liquid explosives was thwarted. It's not quite enough time for every toiletry company to develop and market special 3 oz. containers. And besides, every drugstore has a "travel kit" section where you can get

Shut up, square. I bet you cried when you got hit while playing dodgeball too.

The only thing this guy is guilty of is making the TSA look like the bunch of fools they actually are.

the whole screening thing doesnt work. they should just profile people to see who are the most likely to do suicide bombings.

instead of screening 90 yr old ladies and pregnant ladies etc....

Probably the best solution is to allow foreign visitors to arrive by airplane into this country, but after that they must walk to their destination. No connecting flights, no train or bus service. Nothing.

This rule should also apply to anyone who looks to be of foreign origin.

It's just an idea but I think it could work.

"Foreign visitors"? The dude's from Puerto Rico, that makes him an American citizen. Look it up.

That also means, lest anyone be confused, that the people who screened him in PR are the TSA, just like in every other city in the United States (which isn't saying much - we've already heard about similar issues in Atlanta, LA, Chicago...).

Oh, and lastly, there's no TSA rule against rocks. You can carry a big-ass rock onto any plane in any city, unless the screener happens to be over-zealous. You can't bring more than 3oz of face cream however. Don't like it? Complain to the government - you know, the people we elected, because they made the rules. "Government of the people, for the people, and by the people," people.

Oops I forgot that PR was the 51st state. Shame on me.

To continue the cleansing of misfits from the airline terminals I would say, "Shut them all down." There's just too many people going from here to there for no reason except doing same.

Couldn't these people do all that by watching cable TV or going on line?

It's the same with cell phones. WTF do these people have to communicate?

STOP IT ALREADY!
