Early this morning, four people were hit by gunfire and another person was stabbed while in Union Square Park. WABC 7 says that a fight "broke out in a McDonald's at 17th and Broadway." And then someone fired into a crowd in Union Square Park - it's unclear if the fight from McDonald's traveled into the park.
Four men were hit by the gunfire and a woman was stabbed in a related incident. All this took place before 1AM this morning, and the park was full of people attending a Halloween party there. Once people started to hear gunfire near East 14th and Union Square West, it became chaos. One person said, "We just saw people running and then we heard gunshots. We started running."
The four shooting victims were taken to Bellevue and the stabbing victim was taken to St. Vincent's; all are in stable condition. The police believe the shooting may be gang-related and told WABC 7 that arrests were imminent.

Not surprised. I knew something had happened last night when I heard the helicopters and sirens, and I am on First Avenue...Union Square is a must-avoid except in the mornings.
That McD on 17th and Union Sq. needs to close down, the gangs congregate there all the time. The incident with the kid that was stabbed in Union Sq. a while ago also started there.

i was on bleecker last night and some punk pulled a knife on another guy and the cops swarmed like a hornets nest and beat the knife wielder down.

I heard it was a rubber knife and part of a costume. The cops did a good job anyway, at least they didn't shoot him, which they should have.

for native New Yorkers (like myself) Union Square IS resembling Kansas more and more. If not for the occasional gang violence it may as well be a (very crowded) mall in the middle of nowhere.
You have got to be kidding? Union Square is one of the least dangerous places anywhere in the city. There are people around even at 6 in the morning, and there's a cop shop in the subway station. Now the old Union Square was a different story. Shootings can happen anywhere, and if you get shot that's mostly bad luck and physics acting against you. Real gangsters are not hanging out at Union Square, they're mugging hipsters in Bushwick. I would blame last night on Halloween, not Union Square. You get a bunch of liquored up teenagers running around in masks, and yeah, expect some problems.

It seems that several of the injured had previous arrest records. Can't the city do something about slowing down the response time to these kind of incidents?

if you'd asked any cops last night, they would have told you that the place was swarming with gang members. one little barbie doll from california, a naive tourist thinking that this is new york, and a college student who wants peace in the world, and little did they know that gang members had a plan to spit in their faces.

Why cant they do their shootings and stabbings in their own neighborhoods? Why do they have come down to Union Square. I'm sure there is a McDonalds closer to where they live.
