As outrageous as this may seem, this sort of makes sense: James Lipton, he of Inside the Actors' Studio, used to be a pimp in Paris! ABC reports:
The revered TV presenter, who has sat down with Hollywood's biggest names for in-depth chats about their life and work over the last 13 years, has revealed he once procured clients for French hookers. We'll have to go back and see how he discussed Moulin Rouge with Nicole Kidman when she was on the show. Lipton explains his foree into the seedy side of street life saying, "This was when I was very very young, living in Paris, penniless, unable to get any kind of working permit... I had a friend who worked in what is called the Milieu...this young woman and I, we made a rather good living, I must say." We may now have to actually read his new book, Inside Inside - where he also reveals his life with gypsies, and his role on Guiding Light. Who knew?!
Inside the Actors Studio was filmed at The New School until their contract ended in 2005; it's now filmed at the Michael Schimmel Center for the Arts at Pace University.

This was on Conan over a week ago.
this dude is soooooo funny, the pimpimg is nothing to be proud, but the whole story has build his carachter in deed.
Pimps in France must be a lot different than they are here. I wonder if he smacked his bitch up for holding out on him.
NO WAY, that is AWESOME.
Wait, he was a pimp, or did he just patronize a LOT of hookers? There's a difference and I'm not sure Lipton knows it.
Lipton explains his foree into the seedy side of street life saying: "This was when I was very very young, living in Paris, penniless, unable to get any kind of working permit, I said to myself 'It's hard out here for a pimp.'"
Lipton must have read George Orwell's updated memoir "Down and Out in Paris and London and Pimping Whores Instead of Working in Restaurants."
James Lipton is a good story teller and at age 80 he has some good stories to tell. His classical education shows itself in his facility with language and in the themes around which he groups his essays. There are those who state that Inside Inside is too centered on Lipton as if that is a detriment instead of an asset. Lipton has had a rich life and he has met quite a few interesting characters outside of the well-knowns he’s interviewed on the show. The manner in which he introduces you to these characters and allows you to get to know them through his memories is quite engaging. Still, this book may not be engaging for everyone. Before purchasing Inside Inside, or any book for that matter, I would suggest sampling one chapter of the book. If you would like an audio sample of Chapter 6 of Inside Inside you may search YouTube for the ISBN-13 number for Inside Inside. The number is 978-052595035.
