Bronx Bouncer Killed Over Last Call

2007_10_beermug.jpgA city employee moonlighting as a bouncer at The Bronx Cocktail was killed by a man angry that it was past last call. Raymond Barnett, 38, was killed when the man fired a gun into the bar around 5AM yesterday.

Barnett worked for the city's Department of Design and Construction as the head of fleet management, but had taken the job at the bar to help out with bills. He had been closing up when a group of men asked to be served. Barnett refused and the men returned, firing into the Pelham Bay bar. Barnett was hit in the neck and torso and was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center.

The police are looking for the group, who were driving a black Cadillac. His wife of 11 years, Eydi, sobbed to the Post, "I want the person who did this to rot in jail. Get them. Whoever did it, they took away a hard-working man, and father and my husband. They don't know what they did." Barnett's two daughters are 8 and 10 years old.

Dude, the bouncer doesn't make the law. Crazy person.

A person working for the Department of Design and Construction as the Head of Fleet Management had to take another job. That job must didn't pay enough, it sounds impressive.

people take other jobs for their own reasons. they could have a huge mortgage, they could have credit dept, regardless of their reasons, the second job is not the issue here, it's the fact that a group of street thugs killed this man over "one more drink" which is clear, they didn't need.

People like to knock bouncers, but all the ones I know do a good job protecting patrons and staff from irresponsible and drunk a-holes with a minimum of violence. RIP Ray Barnett; he sounds like a good guy who died doing his job well.

Re #2:

Salaries of civil employees are part of the City Record and are available to the public (http://home2.nyc.gov/html/records/home.html). According to last year's Civil List, "R Barnett" employed by "Department of Design and C" made $58,666.

Very sad that this man's life was taken :(

* meant to say civil service employees.

dbc, thanks for the info. It's a very sad and senseless murder.

$58,666—gross. Not net. Which means he prob did need a second job.

I knew Ray......He was one of the sweetest and bravest men around. I am sooo sad that he is no longer around... We all miss you Ray.

I also knew Ray and he was the nicest person you could have met. He always had a smile on his face and made you laugh. It hurts me to write this but I had to reply to the comments made by "Smitty" and "RoDogg". Just because bouncers don't make the law, it doesn't give anybody to take somebody life away. The bar was closed!!! If you wanted to drink go to the liquor store and buy a bottle of liquor. As for "RoDogg", yeah he took a second job, all he wanted was the best for his family. You have no idea what kind of person he was so if you dont have a nice comment do not post it. He will be missed by everybody. May he Rest In Peace!! We miss you, Ray!!!
