The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals thinks the Port Authority is a liar when it comes to how the agency will handle the the tens to possibly hundreds of cats it hopes to trap from the grounds of JFK Airport.
The Port Authority ramped up its cat trapping efforts, claiming that cats were a danger to air safety and passengers, since leftover food (much of it given by airport and airline workers) would attract rodents and, more worrisomely, birds, to the grounds. The Post reports people who called the PA to complain (most - if not all - JFK cats are feral, which would make them unadoptable and likely to be euthanized) have been told the cats will be adopted out.
The Mayor's Alliance's Jane Hoffman accused the agency of "lying to the public by saying these animals will somehow be miraculously adopted." Even the city's Animal Care and Control, which would be probably be where the cats go, says the cats will probably be euthanized: "We don't have the resources to rehabilitate them, even if they are rehabilitatable." Still, the Port Authority's spokesman Pasquale DiFulco said, "They will be in a safe place until they can be turned over to the proper authorities." Hmm, can they turn Terminal 5 into a huge cat colony?
Disclosure: Our two cats were taken in by a rescue group. The black kitten was in a feral cat colony on Madison and 115th, the grey tabby was four days old and about to be euthanized at a shelter when rescued. Learn more about the NYC Feral Cat Council's efforts to Trap-Neuter-Return cats and you can donate to support those programs as well as shelters in general via the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals. And many shelters accept donations of blankets and towels, even newspapers.

A wise man once said, "Spay and neuter your pets."
BARC (in Williamsburg) also takes in feral cats from time to time. They also accept volunteers, which basically means you just go in and pet the animals. The idea is the more human contact the better chance they have of being adopted. We are volunteers there. Some cats are really friendly (pets dropped off by owners) and some are more troubled. But I have personally seen cats that came in distrusting humans and leave desiring attention and snugs.
So, if you live near BARC and you like cats, please swing by and volunteer. It's a blast. You'll laugh. I promise.
Trust me you would not want to have a cat sucked into a jet engine. It would not be pretty.

cry me a river. the kittens must die
I love it when people create registrations just to evoke death and mayhem. Nice folks!
Haha, Toby, you are right, more than likely it isn't a pretty sight. Eek!
Port Authority is run by a bunch of cat-haters, pure and simple. Never trust anyone who doesn't like the little furballs.
Come on, Toby, when was the last time you heard about a cat being sucked into a jet intake? You would think if any airline had to cancel a flight, deboard an entire plane and send it back to the maintenance hangar for foreign object damage to an engine, it would make the Times, eh? Don't make up more nonsensical excuses for the Port Authority. They make up enough on their own.
The Port Authority IS not intelligent, that simple. As I have already posted, this is an ignorant and misguided plan, and a costly mistake. Extermination is neither effective nor cost-effective; in fact, it costs 3 times as much as spay-neuter programs.
Birds get sucked into jet engines ecause they are aloft - are the cats going to jump into the engines? And how is getting rid of the cats going to stop rodents attracted by excess food? The fact that there are rodents (as there are everywhere there is food prepared or disposed of)is why the cats are there in the first place. Cats hunt and eat both birds and rodents. Duh.
They should just spay/nueter them and let them be.
Humans are the most evil creatures living on this earth. For some people, they still have the Dark Ages mentality, especially the barbaric, cold-blooded acts against innocent animals.
Those sadistic sociopaths are just COWARDS. If you are really brave, then take a fight against someone your equal, not the most vulnerable, weakest members of our society.
For many animals, they knew nothing but suffering from the day they were born to the day they die. Compassion and benevolence to all, including the animals that share this earth with us.
Cats Do not kill a vast amount of native mammals and birds each year. WE do! The superior "the humans" we still go hunting after animals like cave man... if you want animal meat buy it from the market! There are hundreds of dead animal meat to be had there at a price of course, as an excuse to kill them. HUMANS KILL VAST AMOUNT OF NATIVE MAMMALS AND BIRDS EACH YEAR, threw habitat destruction, hunting, deforestation, etc. Look at all the devastation in all the forests.
to read this hateful comments about killing it is so uggly, for many centuries man have been penalized for beeing christian, catholic, dark, jewish,protestant... you name it and it has beeing man that has killed millions for not other reason as... we do not like that other person.
Can we all grow up one day and stop the killing?
What happened in 911, has a lot to do with this hate of anything we don't like! I lot of things make sense to Osama, like it makes sense to kill the cats to all of the people in this forum! (total nonsense)
Let's show the world that we are educated and instead of the word Killing... let's start using " how can we help to make this world a great world"

Hello, for all the ignorant people who commented on this article, which seems to be a lot of them. I work with animals frequently and are on my way to becoming a vet. I think the problem is lack of compassion and uneducated people who make comments about areas that they have no knowledge about. I take care of feral cats right now in my area, killing them is not a humane alternative. They do not starve outside, freeze, bother other animal/people and they are cared for by many people. Also if they new what they were talking about statistics show it does not eliminate them permanently from the area. The bottom line is they have as much right to be outside in the area as any other animal/human does.
