Marko Perkovic (known as Thompson on stage, portrayed by Kitler at right) is coming to town, and the protesters are awaiting -- with good reason. The Croatian rock star is known for nostalgically warbling for the Ustaša regime and glorifying the Nazis in his songs, and we can't imagine his anti-Semitism sing-a-longs are going to be very popular here in New York. The musician isn't all about the controversial topics (though it does get him lots of publicity), he also croons tunes about God and family. Can these lighter topics balance out his glorification of war and his nation's Nazi past? No...but he'll be bringing his full set for two shows to the Croatian Center in Midtown next month anyway.
In past concerts, he has performed an anthem of the country's Nazi-backed military regime — the Ustaša — that references extermination camps where tens of thousands of Jews, Serbs, and Gypsies were killed during World War II. He greets adoring crowds with a famous Ustaša slogan — and many respond with the Nazi salute. Many individuals and organizations, including Weitzman, have been in talks with the Croatian Embassy, who are equally as interested in stopping these shows (in an attempt to clean up their image with interesting in joining the European Union). Interestingly enough, tickets are being sold in a number of places around town, including some popular Croatian bars in Astoria -- the proprietors of which don't see why the $45 ticket is so controversial. In fact, many are touting him as a Croatian hero and "good person.""To glorify what happened during the Holocaust is not what we need in the world today, nor do we need it in this city — after the events we have recently been through. To play with that for the sake of music, or even conviction, I find it totally repugnant," the director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center's Task Force Against Hate, Mark Weitzman, said.

"Illinois Nazis. I hate Illinois Nazis."
You beat me too it!!!
I see "The Blues Brothers" every time it's on TV...
"It's a free country, and people can choose to be offensive. We are not in the business of censorship or shutting people down, but we do hope that when people understand what they are about they will not want to hear them play,"
free speech means that he can play & people can choose to go or not.
Absolutely, just like the protesters are demonstrating.
"Can these lighter topics balance out his glorification of war and his nation's Nazi past?"
Um, Hitler made the trains run on time?
i hear the 12 tribes of israel are gonna work security for the shows.
Actually, I think it's Mussolini who made the trains run on time.
So, y'know, that a strike against Hitler I guess.
Call them what you like. Nazis, Schmatzies. Soooo sensational! Hateful dubmbells.
"The right for me to swing my arms stops at your face."
That's a real shame... I'd love to test that out on this guy.
Has anyone TAKEN THE TIME OUT to translate these lyrics? Marko Perkovic has NEVER written a song glorifying Nazis or against Jews. Germany, a country with strict laws in regards to anti-semitism, has allowed Marko Perkovic Thompson to play. Why? Because they did their research and even read all the translated lyrics. Marko Perkovic sings songs about God, Family and the homeland, is that so wrong? Earlier in his career (when it took off) his songs were written for Croatia's fight for independance. He supports PATRIOTISM. He is falsely being accused of writing the song "Jasenovac i Gradiska Stara", this song does not exist on any of his albums. So overall he is being accused falsely because of ONE song that he has not written nor ever recorded. I challenge anyone to translate all the songs on his recorded albums and support your arguement.
It is absolutely true what torcida says above. This whole thing is being blown so out of proportion. Croatia's association with Germany in WWII, was only in support as they were aliies, they did not take orders from Hitler or the Nazi party, and they (Ustashe) fought within the country for it's own independence, not outside trying to take over the world. Thompson, is an artist who sings about things he saw, and pieces of history, that date back 100's of years, family, god and country. It is shameful that in NY of all places, people want to censor lyrics, and lyrics no less that most people don't understand. If we are going to do this (stop him from performing in NY), I think we should go all the way, lets shut down all the record companies, cable stations, radio stations, newspaper/print outlets, and walk around the city trying to entertain ourselves as and with mimes.
I want someone to take up torcida's challange and find any published work that Thompson wrote that prooves this hatred.
Oh, by the way, I find it hard to believe that someone touted as a bad man, would be donating his own time and money to repair and rebuild many chruches accross the country that were damaged and detroyed during the recent war in the 1990's
