- There’s activity over at the old Jade Mountain space on East 12th, the restaurant with the iconic neon CHOW MEIN sign. Jeremiah’s Vanishing New York (via Eater) reports that an on-scene workman offered up this tidbit: “It’s going to be a restaurant.” Jade Mountain closed earlier this year after much-missed owner Reginald Chan was struck by a vehicle while delivering food. Here’s a photo of the restaurant’s landmark sign taken by reader Jay Jaffe: Red, quasi-mystic aura and all, it's the sign on the left here all lit up.
- Grub Street reports that Zak Pelaccio might up the “urban localvore” menu quotient of Borough Food and Drink in a few months, when the chef (with partner Rick Carmac) transitions the restaurant space away from China Grill Management. Many hope that the changes to Borough Food and Drink’s menu will resemble the controlled chaos and innovation Pelaccio brought to his first restaurant, South Williamsburg’s Chickenbone Café.
- Sunday Night Soups, food writer The Gurgling Cod’s guest stint on Serious Eats, pairs Sunday night football games with different soup recipes. Some of them, like Fannie Farmer’s 1918 Fish Chowder, have been downright arcane, and last night’s was straight out of 1997’s NFL Family Cookbook: John Elway’s Hamburger Soup. “Elway suggests serving this with warm bread,” writes the Cod. Definitely one for the index card recipe file.
