Indian Summer Temps Turn City into Wild West

crimescene.jpgThe weekend got off to a violent start last night with a number of shootings and stabbings around the city. Six young men were shot or stabbed on the streets of New York Friday night and police have made no immediate arrests, primarily because there are no apparent motives for any of the crimes. 1010WINS runs through the casualties:

  • Jose Batista and a friend were both shot in the stomach while on West 34th around 9 p.m. The 15-year-old Batista was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead. His friend was taken to Harlem Hospital and is in stable condition.
  • Over in Queens around 10 p.m., a 30-year-old man was stabbed in the chest and is in critical condition at Elmhurst General Hospital.
  • In Brooklyn, a 35-year-old man was shot in the leg while on North Oxford Walk in Fort Greene, leaving him in critical condition at Brooklyn Hospital.
  • And two 18-year-olds are in critical condition at Kings County Hospital after a double shooting in Bushwick, Brooklyn left one with wounds to the head and body, while the other was shot in the neck.

In addition, police discovered the body of a woman in her 30s on the floor of her Suffolk St. apartment in Manhattan's Lower East Side last night around 3 a.m. Neighbors called the police complaining of a foul odor coming from the woman's apartment.

Note: We'll note that there are varying accounts of the woman found dead in her apartment. WCBS News reports that the woman was found in an apartment on Suffolk St. in the Bed-Stuy neighborhood of Brooklyn. 1010WINS is reporting that the woman's body was found in an apartment on Suffolk St. on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. WNBC decided to play it safe and split the difference, writing that the woman's body was found in an apartment on Suffolk St. in the Lower East Side of Brooklyn.
