Two Arrested in Staten Island Hate Crime

2007_10_siattack.jpgThe police arrested two white men in the the beating of a black man in Staten Island. The Reverend Al Sharpton appeared with the victim and said, "We cannot live in a city, state or nation where people cannot safely be in the streets or anywhere else because of the color of their skin."

In Mariners Harbor on Tuesday night, 20-year-old Skylar McCormick and four friends - who are white - were having a foot race down a street and, at one point, he leaned (the Advance reports he "either touched or jumped on...accounts vary") against a Cadillac, raising the ire of the car's owner and his friends. Five white men, allegedly using racial slurs and carrying a baseball bat, followed McCormick, who was beaten and whose jaw was broken in two places.

The car's owner, Daniel Avissato, 21, and Mark Maleto, 21, were charged with a number of crimes including assault as a hate crime and aggravated harassment as a hate crime. Others are being questioned. Mariners Harbors residents are shocked; Brandon Freeman, who is black and is friends with Avissato, told the Advance, "The idea...is ridiculous. Because it was four white kids in a Cadillac, they are automatically going to say it's racist. If it was a white kid, it wouldn't even be on the news."

You can watch Sharpton's press conference here; he says that with all the hangman's noose incidents, since "no one has paid," people are encouraged to continue putting them up. Last weekend, a racist message was found on the visiting Harlem Hellfighters football team's bench when they were playing against an S.I. high school. And in another hate crime incident, swastikas were found on a volunteer Hatzolah ambulance in Queens. Police Commissioner Kelly said they were a result of a "copycat syndrome" of hate crimes modeled after the swastikas found in Brooklyn.

According to the Times: Maleto, 21, were arrested on charges including...criminal possession of a weapon — which the police said was a sneaker, because the victim was kicked.

Huh? That seems like a bizarre charge. Does that mean if I punch someone, my ring is a weapon?

foot race
Do 20 year-olds do that?
if it was a white kid
If it were a white kid, I am not certain that there would have been a fight. I think the "racist" argument is pretty compelling here. I have seen white-on-white violence that began with a car screeching to a halt in front of a group of people, but that was on Long Island on St. Patrick's Day.

But if there had been a fight (or a "beating" - where were this kid's four friends? "Foot racing" I guess!) and the kid was white, I'm sure the story would be in the paper, but without the Sharpton parade and more of the kid's mom and police.

Sigh. Since this site took off guest comments, this site got so BORING. Has anyone noticed the fewer number of comments? I use to love getting engaged in the back-and-forth word battles as everyone put their heart & soul into expressing their opinion-- now this is becoming just another boring news site...

#4, I gather you miss the racist comments from a bunch of inane drones. I, for one, do not.

Anonemouse, thanks for posting another boring comment.

He was beaten because his name is Skylar.

Yup, pretty much. It's crazy. I've read reports where the "deadly weapon" was a shoe, a spoon, and a book.

AnonEMouse, I don't miss the rantings.
Besides how hard is it to register??

I don't miss the rantings. I suspect that those people that made the biggest stink about the rantings weren't people that were actually offended about anything, they just felt it was their duty to speak up and/or complain on people's behalf.

Who's interested in insane opinions by pussies to scared to post eponymously? I mean, my opinions might be insane, but at least I'll bother to make up a name to stand by them with.

I like the part where the "Mariners Park residents are shocked...". Racism in Staten Island? 5 "Growing Up Gotti" wannabes pissed that a non-Italian TOUCHED their Cadillac?? Racial epithets uttered whilst beating someone unconcious? SHOCKED. SHOCKED I TELL YOU.

But still, Al Sharpton needs to go away. Or get a job or something.

Kevin Bracken, yes 20 year olds can still have a fun foot race. Lance Armstrong rode a bike while in his 30's. It's call activity and it never gets old. You need to stop away from your computer, ipod, cellphone, video games, and porn and discover life outside electronics. If you think 20 is to old to still have a foot race, grow up and step away from the mouse and keyboard.

AnonEMouse, agreed. Closing guest comments was a disappointment for this board. This site will survive without guests but there is no more discussion. Comments have declined since and some articles go without even having comments posted to them. It was like a battle between guests and members and with that brought good dialog [some good/some bad] and kept things interesting. Now the site is full with all members who agree with each other .... boring.

Re: commenter registration -there is nothing preventing former guest commenters from using an anonymous GMail or Yahoo account to sign up. The problem is that some of the guest comments were so toxic that we needed to end them. So some blame lays with those individuals.

I hope others with differing opinions do sign up.
