Last Night's Action: Guerin Gets Going

2006_12_sislanderslogo.jpg

  • Islanders 5, Capitals 2: Bill Guerin, master of the assists, finally scored as the Islanders romped host Washington. The new captain had a hat trick as he got his name in the scorebook for the first time as an Islanders. He had six assists entering the game. Despite Guerin's heroics, Bryan Berard scored the go-ahead goal and added two assists.

  • Thrashers 5, Rangers 3: Should the Rangers get credit for playing with spirit in the final period? No, because they played listless hockey for the first 48 minutes, allowing two first-period goals and a shorthanded strike in the second. Early returns on the 2-4 Rangers? Not great.

  • Flyers 4, Devils 0: Pretty soon, the Devils will start clicking their heels and saying, "There's no place like home." Back-to-backs are hard enough as is, but they're almost impossible when both are road games and both come in a nine-game away stretch to start the season. The Flyers have been playing as good as anyone -- unlike last season -- so don't look too deeply into this loss.

  • Rutgers 30, South Florida 27: For the second straight year, Rutgers derailed a team with national title hopes under the lights of Piscataway. A fake field goal in the the third quarter proved critical, and Ray Rice ran 181 yards. The win basically salvaged Rutgers up-and-down season and kept alive hopes for a big-time bowl game.
  • Red Bulls 1, Galaxy 1: With their playoff matchup -- against New England of course -- already assured -- the Red Bulls found themselves in the unlikely role of postseason-bound spoiler. They did just that, denying the Galaxy the full number of points by drawing the game in Carson, Calif.

I know everyone in NY likes to discredit the Islanders, but they are ahead of the Rangers and Devils, adn have more goals. You have to admit, their strong start is surprising!
