Pencil This In

ART: Secrets of Coney Island Creek opens at the Brooklyn Public Library tonight. The exhibit of photographs by photog/author/Coney Island native Charles Denson goes back to the 1960s "when the waterway was at a low point, surrounded by industry and suffering from neglect and pollution. Since then, portions of the creek have been reclaimed, drawing both wildlife and residents to its shores. The photographs in Secrets of Coney Island Creek document those early decades and offer a fascinating and comprehensive portrait of the creek today and its relationship to the Coney Island community."

200710bsp.jpgMUSIC: Stop by and say "hi" at Gothamist House today. And later...Take one established band: British Sea Power (pictured), and mix 'em up with the buzz of slightly newer bands: 1990s, Pela and Tiny Masters of Today...and you get one heck of a good lineup. CMJ badges accepted, and there are even some tix left for the badgeless.

6pm // Bowery Ballroom [6 Delancey St] // $17

EVENT: Tonight the Slipper Room separates from the music madness of CMJ for a bit to host Girls Write Now. The "nonprofit volunteer mentoring organization that has been matching bright, creative teenage girls from New York City's public high schools with professional women writers in the community since 1998." The night will include readings by Janice Erlbaum and Tayari Jones. Earlier in the night (5:30pm) catch two girls in the program who will read from their work at Bluestockings (172 Allen St).

7pm // The Slipper Room [167 Orchard St] // Free

THEATER: Berlin, 1922. The Treaty of Versailles has left the city’s citizens in desperate shape; in an abandoned cabaret one washed-up dancer finds solace in playing the games of her childhood. When a rich, gay Jewish man happens upon her hobby, he joins in the regressive fun. Soon their games catch the eye of a promoter who starts selling tickets to their bizarre escapades – the show becomes a hit among intellectual circles and subversive hi-jinks ensue! This is the surreal concept of Stolen Chair Theater Company’s Kinderspiel, which Martin Denton calls “dazzlingly entertaining, extremely well-crafted, and at once both funny and a little off-putting.” In fact, he doubts there will be “many new American plays as challenging and original as this one.” – John Del Signore

7:30pm // Under St. Marks [94 St. Marks Place] // Tickets cost $18.

COMEDY: Charlie Todd and his troupe of able-bodied comedians are throwing down at UCB Theater tonight. Come check out Cage Match, which takes comedy and wrestling and throws 'em in the ring together. Who will win?!

11pm // UCB Theater [307 W 26th St] // $5
