Donnie Baseball Not Ready For Prime Time?

While the Joe Torre situation drags on and on and on, at least one candidate apparently doesn’t want the job. According to a friend of Mattingly’s “he does not feel ready for the manager's job and is uncomfortable with replacing Joe Torre.” Furthermore, he has told a member of the Steinbrenner family his feelings.

While Don's agent denies the report, Mattingly is absolutely right to be wary of taking this job. He is easily the most popular Yankee by far and taking over for a respected and admired manager is a no-win situation. Furthermore, appointing Mattingly manager would create problems for Steinbrenner as well, how do you fire “Donnie Baseball”?

What affect this has on Torre’s fate remains to be seen. Will this put Joe Girardi at the top of the list or does it open the door for someone like Tony LaRussa or Bobby Valentine? One name we can cross off the list is Dusty Baker who signed a contract with the Reds. Stay tuned, the Steinbrenner family meeting starts today with the airing of grievances.

Who would want to follow Torre? Unfortunately LaRussa is the only egotistical jerk who would.

"how do you fire 'Donnie Baseball'”?

The same way you fire Joe Torre.

Has anybody thought that Mattingly is jinxed? He joined the Yankees after they went to the World series, then retired before they went back again, 15 years later. Then he joined the Yankees as a coach and they haven't won a World series since. The moment he retires a second time and goes back to Indiana the Yankees will win again in the post season.

I'm sorry for Don but it's the truth.

Classic old school Mattingly poster.

I think what Mattingly is doing is his way of showing respect to Torre. It's like he's waiting for Joe's approval on his next career move.

I think if Torre chose to retire Mattingly would feel freer to say he wants to manage the Yankees. In another scenario (a firing) Mattingly could be seen as a willing participant in Torre's removal.

He doesn't want to take over a hostile clubhouse.

Sounds right, MJG.
But I don't understand why Torre should be such a terrifying act to follow. I mean he's done well (or did well) given the pressure of the boss, NYC, prima donna players, etc. But as of late, it seems like a lot of talent has been squandered.
