Tidbits

  • Get thee to Flushing -- according to the Times, it's much more than the city's "other Chinatown."
  • Michael Ruhlman discusses this week's episode of the Next Iron Chef and the loss of Chef Davies: "But sad I was to see her go—what a camera friendly smile, and what a buoyant presence generally. I much prefer her to the head sweater, the meat man, or the bald guy with the Neanderthal brow! But for those who lament the presence of a boys club--I can't believe you'd say it diminishes the competition. Would you rather the judges gave the ladies special treatment because of their gender?" Hell, no.
  • All hail the snail! Slow Food NYC announced their new “Snail of Approval” program, which recognizes chefs, restaurateurs, producers, culinary artisans, and food purveyors for their devotion to Slow Food principles. A few of the first honorees include Applewood, Ronnybrook Farms Dairy, Blue Apron Foods, Bemelman's Bar, and Pearl Oyster Bar, among others.

Applewood...good choice. The chef and owner has cultivated a relationship with growers and purveyors in the region. Fresh food, imaginatively done.

Excellent wine choices, as well, although not particularly local.

  • Laren Spirer

    Isn't it, though?
