- Today on the Gothamist Newsmap: a child shot on Kingsborough Walk in Brooklyn, a person under a train at Kingston Ave. and Lincoln Pl. in Brooklyn, and a pedestrian struck at 12th St. and 8th Ave. in Manhattan.
- John Mayer performed an impromptu set at the Mercury Lounge to the surprise of attendees last night.
- John Galt Corp., the contractor doing the demolition work at the Deutsche Bank Building where two firefighters were killed, is suing Bovis Lend Lease. The company was fired after a smoking worker ignited the deadly blaze, but it wants almost $20 million in compensation for the lost work.
- Dozens of men showed up Saturday to audition for an epic production of Tolstoy's "War and Peace" by the Metropolitan Opera. According to WNBC, the production requires "1,200 costumes, 52 soloists in 68 singing parts, 118 choristers, 41 ballet dancers, about 250 extras, a horse, a dog, a goat and four chickens."
- Apartment buildings in NYC are going smoke-free, banning smokers from renting units.
- The Strand bookstore is celebrating its 80th birthday.
- The homeless man who was set on fire while sleeping outside a Harlem church the other week succumbed to the burns that covered 40% of his body and died Tuesday. Felix Najara was 49 years old and came to New York from Mexico.
- Remember the Titans, but not necessarily fondly. Those confused by the team playing the Philadelphia Eagles this afternoon should know that the Jets were wearing throwback uniforms to the franchise's prior incarnation as the Titans. The Titans/Jets lost to Philly.
