MTA May Increase Fares More Than Previously Thought

2007_10_subwaywait.jpg

The MTA has announced the times of public hearings where the agency will discuss the impending bus and subway fare hike. There are eight meetings across the five boroughs, Westchester, and Long Island. We've all heard about the two kinds of fare hikes - a traditional across-the-board hike and another hike that would give discounts during off-peak rides. The a single ride would be $2.25, up from the current $2. And the early mentioned off-peak fare was $1.50, but now the Daily News finds that the off-peak fare might be higher at $1.75.

The MTA says that the $1.75 is "not" their proposal, but gives them "flexibility" to try to raise the $580 million it needs. The Straphangers' Campaign Gene Russianoff is suspicious, "Flexibility is a code word for 'it could happen.' They are proposing the biggest fare hike in the history of the system."

Here are the dates, times and places of the public hearings - register to speak here and there will even be a workshop and Web seminar:

Didn't they massively screw up last time fare increases were proposed? I believe there was some kind of accounting error where they actually had a surplus rather than a deficit but the fare hike (1.50 -> 2.00) was kept in place..

Well, at least you will pay less during off hours for the totally crappy service you will receive. If only the $2.25 guaranteed you air to breathe on the 4/5 trains...

They kept this shit 5 cents for the longest time and now we have to pay for their stupidity.

THANK YOU IDIOT who kept the fare at 5 cents for like 30 yrs! Thanks for no 2nd avenue subway!

Simple solution - you want to drive into Manhattan $20, plus tolls, no discounts.

whats the point of holding meetings? the decision has already been made, this is just to look good on paper.

caught you peeping at the lady sitting on the bench!

Since the straphangers are such proponents for taxing vehicles (even delivery trucks and the like) during peak travel times... I just chuckle every time I read about "congestion pricing" coming to the subways...
Think about how much nicer the subway and streets are going to be when everyone adjusts their schedule to avoid the taxes!
Just another plot to take more of our money IMO.

the only solution is to rise up and destroy the MTA. kick out the money grubber fat cats with their big salaries and bring efficiency and transparency back to one of our most important city services.

The Palisades Center (where one of the public hearings will be held) is in Rockland County to take the comments of West-of-Hudson railroad riders (in Rockland and Orange counties).

If i'm going to pay more for Subway rides, then i'd expect less delays and trains stopping btwn stations. I'd expect them to run during rain, heat, snow etc. DOn't know how likely incr fares and going to lead to better service! Will be taking my bike.
