Welcome to the first day of the Yankees’ offseason, buckle your seatbelts this is going to be a wild ride.
While it is 99.9% certain that the Yankees are going to have a new manager for 2008, his identity remains a mystery. Joe Girardi, Don Mattingly and Tony LaRussa are the top names you hear, but remember in 1995 the Yankees shocked a lot of people when they chose Torre, so don’t be surprised if they go in a completely different direction.
And that is just the first of many decisions and challenges ahead. A-Rod can opt-out of his contract after the World Series ends and with Scott Boras as his agent that seems a certainty. The Yankees can try and sign him to an extension before that, but A-Rod may decide he has had enough of New York and head to a less intense place to play, perhaps California.
Then you have the two old guard members who are free agents, Jorge Posada and Mariano Rivera. The Yankees will want both back, but at 36 and 38 how much longer will they stay effective? Both seem interested in seeing what is available in the free agent market and since both are loyal to Torre, they might not want to come back to New York.
Next up on the list is a pair of $16-million options. The Yankees control Bobby Abreu’s and they will probably exercise it. But, they could trade him like they did with Gary Sheffield last year. Andy Pettitte’s holds a player’s option and he may not want to return if Joe isn’t back.
Throw in the impending free agency of Ron Villone, Doug Mientkiewicz, Luis Vizcaino, Jose Molina and Roger Clemens and you could have a very different team show up in Tampa next February. The Yankees have correctly identified the need to get younger and with Hughes and Chamberlain they have two big pieces to build with. There are a lot of moves to make and a lot of tough calls coming up.

Hopefully Steinbrenner's old age will give him the decency to hold a tribute day for Torre at the beginning of next season. He deserves it.
a rod to the mets?
I hope George Steinbrenner re-signs Roger Clemens for another $28 million, because that's just smart.
why isn't anyone talking about Cashman getting the axe?
Get rid of both, and Cashman
Removing Steinbrenner from any executive decision making privilege and canning his army of yes-men sycophants, the so called "brass", would be the best thing to happen to this team. Just let him sit back and collect on his 10% ownership. which really isnt all that much, funny he should wield so much power...
Torre et al. have only established the greatest dynasty in the history of baseball. It would be insanely stupid to get rid of him now. My guess is, if they bring in La Russa, Rivera and Posada will leave, so will A-Rod, the team will implode under the pressure and scrutiny and will finish in third place in the AL East, missing the playoffs for the first time in TWELVE YEARS.
Keep A-Rod.
Keep Joe.
Get rid of Cashman.
Get rid of Clemens.
Sign Roy Oswalt.

sounds like a good plan to me..
Rodriguez carried the Yankees for a lot of the season and will probably win the MVP award. If you have the option to keep him, YOU KEEP HIM.
This is a lame post.
A-Rod will leave if HE wants to leave. He is one of the main reasons the Yankees made it to the post season, so why are you blaming the Yankees foibles on him? Do you think he magically controls the pitching and the other hitters (who stranded, what, 10 people on base last night)? Puh-leeze.
I hope A-Rod makes a decision soon, because any talk of him to the Mets makes me sick. There's no reason to move either Wright or Reyes. And, I just don't like the guy, regardless of the numbers he puts up during the regular season.
Send the Yankees to Alaska
Anchorage needs baseball
Fore!
Jose Vizcaino hasn't played for the Yankees in years!
I also think we should keep Joba in the bullpen to be Mariano's successor, and make next year's rotation Wang, Petitte, Hughes, Mussina, Kennedy. That could work.
Thanks #14, I guess I was thinking about the "good old days"
Get rid of Jeter and Posada.
Haha yeah right about getting rid of Posada.
As much as I hate the Yankees (Red Sox fan), getting rid of Torre and Arod is stupid. Torre is only the best manager for the Yankees. Who else would stay around and deal with Steinbrenner's crap, and be able to handle all the egos that come from 8-figure players?
And Arod is the best player in baseball, bar none. He has some mental issues, and would do better in a smaller market, but if it wasn't for him the Yankees would have been in third place in the AL East.
