- Cleveland 6 Yankees 4: The 2007 Yankees’ season ended as it began, in disarray. Chien-Ming Wang didn’t make it out of the second inning and while Mike Mussina was reasonably effective, he left with a 6-1 deficit. Meanwhile, Paul Byrd managed to shut down the Yankees’ offense. Somehow, Byrd pitched around 10 base runners in five innings and the Yankees squandered numerous opportunities to score. In a way, that was the story of this series as Cleveland continually scored with two outs and New York did not.
The Yankees chipped away late in the game with solo home runs from Cano, A-Rod and Abreu, but they could get no closer and they will once again head into next season in search of their 27th championship. Who will be back and who will be managing in 2008 is hard to say right now, but expect a lot of changes in the Yankees’ organization over the next few weeks.
- Senators 4 Devils 2: Ottawa jumped out to an early 2-0 lead and never looked back, winning easily Monday afternoon. Danny Heatly and Daniel Alfredsson had multiple-point games for the Senators.
- Capitals 2 Islanders 1: Richard Park got New York off to a good start, but the Capitals rallied behind goals from Viktor Kozlov and Brooks Laich. Laich’s goal came midway through the third period and kept Washington unbeaten on the year.

"The 2007 Yankees’ season ended as it began, in disarray"
That's a shame.
- Jerry Seinfeld
Sad to see baseball in NY come to end. It only means short daylight hours and cold weather.
Even though the Yankees were knocked out of the first round in the past three ways this season was definitely an exciting one.Basically everyone had the Yankees written off back..not many teams can say they started 21-29 and still be playing in October.
9/11, New York Yankees, 9/11, New York Yankees, 9/11, New York Yankees, Never Again, Never Again.
9/11, New York Yankees, 9/11 New York Yankees,
9/11, New York Yankees, One of us, one of us.
Here's my thoughts on the top names out there being mentioned as the next manager:
1. Girardi - Guy I want, a tough winner
2. Mattingly - Jinxy McJinxerton
3. LaRussa - Thinks he invented baseball, only guy I'd root against
4. Bobby Valentine - Why the hell not?
5. Brandon Tierney - Gotta love his enthusiasm
6. Alex Rodriguez - Bring back the player-manager, let him take all the responsibility
7. John Sterling & Suzyn Waldman - The first ever co-manager/lovers
8. George Steinbrenner - Think it's so easy? You try it!
9. Pete Rose - Bring back Pete!!
10. Bill Belichick - Not afraid to go the extra mile
Sens are getting the cup. That's my prediction.
I gotta say, when I read this this morning I said, 'YESS!"
Why exactly did Joe pick Wang over Mussina?
because wang was way better all fucking year.
I guess everyone but the Yanks know that they were 6-0 against the Tribe during the regular season? They still win their head to head series though 7-3, yippee!
Finally ESPN will start covering football now.
do people over the age of 12 really care about baseball? that's so bizarre.
#11: dude like im sooo over sports, i know. lets go listen to the arcade fire and wear girl pants and eyeshadow.
Garbage
#2 That's a pretty lame consulation, considering they were expected to win their division and at least get to the WS. They just went from being really under achieving earlier this season to just under achieving.
I'm surprised no one yet has mention the phrase "Trade Jeter!". Anyways, the Yanks would have won many WS there past years if they would have just got better pitching in the off season. They have the bats but no arms. Stop going after bats to win a title, you need arms to stop the other team from scoring. Remember a game is won by who scores the most runs NOT who gets the most hits. Keep Joe and get him some better pitchers to choose from. This isn't Joe fault, stop blaming him. Notice all the teams still in the playoffs have good young pitchers. Who did the Yanks have: Moose and 43 year old Clemens. Not a good pitching rotation did the Yanks in, not Joe! The Redsux did what the Yanks should have done before the 07 season, they get all arms and no bats. I'm thinking maybe the Redsux and Yanks should trade GMs. Every year that Joe been manager he got the Yanks to the playoffs, why would you change that.
The good thing is we'll stop hearing about the Yankees and how they blew the playoffs.
The bad thing is we'll now be under a Joe Torre death watch, so it will be Yankees, Yankees, Yankees until that is settled.
As for Pete Rose, he bet on his own team, which would seem more of a motivational thing than anything else. It isn't like he was injecting himself with BALCO products like someone who should be banned from the sport forever. He would be the perfect Yankee manager, too. George should do it and take on Herr Selig.
The world breathes a sigh of relief as the team that's young, interesting, and likable advances.
I wish the Indians all the best, even though I'll be rooting against them in the ALCS. They whomped the Yankees and are looking really good.

Smile when you say Redsux, you Skankee fan piece of crap !
Best idea I've heard in a long time: John Sterling & Suzyn Waldman - The first ever co-manager/lovers
That would just rock. But...they would also need to keep broadcasting. With them, it's like losing friends when the seasons end, and I can't believe I'm saying that about broadcasters, but they're brilliant.
They really beat themselves in the first and last games...and I've got no problem blaming the locusts for game two, which the Yanks would have won...not that they shouldn't have won regardless, because they still had chances. When the offense goes limp and Wang does too, Pete Rose ain't betting on you.
And yes, bring Pete back--at least let him be the hitting coach.
Any one know where I can see more pictures like the one above...
This is all Steinbrenner's fault.. He created this entire generation of Yankee fan entitlement...God forbid if the Yankees don't win the World Series every year...
It's been seven years since the Yankees have won the World Series ,, oooh the humanity...
Feh..!
Torre should be fired for starting Wang on 3-days rest and not Mussina.
Yeah, Wang was better all season, but not on 3-days rest he wasn't.
A dumbass move.
The yankees were good back when the players wanted to win. Now they're all over-fed, overpaid goombas who just want the season to be over so they can go to the bahamas. What a joke of a baseball "team"
Torre was the best thing that ever happened the the yankees and for some reason unappreciative new yorkers, steinbrenner in particular, cannot wait to throw the book at the guy.
There are legitimate reasons why people hate the yankees franchise, and what's going on here is exemplary those reasons.
I love how Sterling would generally remain completely silent until the start of the game, allowing Suzyn to talk literally up to the first second of a game, when he'd break in with "And here's the first pitch." If Waldman wasn't in mid-sentence, she sometimes managed a "Now here's John Sterling with the play by play."
I always wondered what was happening there. Was Sterling sitting there silently reading notes and saving his voice? Was he in the bathroom? Did he have a mouthful of food, swallowing only at the first windup by the pitcher? Last week Waldman began to announce the game herself and it wasn't until halfway through the first at bat that Sterling broke in. He apologized, saying that he had gone to get Suzyn a cup of coffee, but they were out of milk and in the process of opening a new container someone said "Hey John, you do know that the game started already, right?" Long season. I can't wait 'til next year.
It's alittle known fact that John Sterling and Micheal Kay were lovers, and had a really bad break-up fight after Kay started dateing Paul O'Neil
I wonder if A-Rod will stick around or head for greener pastures. It's got to get tiring hearing about how terrible you are when your "off" years are better than most players' career seasons. Especially when you're compared unfavorably to Derek Jeter (last seen repeatedly grounding into inning-ending double plays).
I'm not sure what other teams, besides the Red Sox, could pay him the kind of money he wants without completely decimating their team's chances in the process. For most other teams, A-Rod's salary is a massive chunk of the payroll.
Someone needs to remind guest [18] that only cocks like the Boston Redcocks. So I'm guessing guest [18] is a big dickhead. Smile the next time you sux on a big Redcock.
Someone needs to remind guest [27] that only cocks like the New York Skanees. So I'm guessing guest [27] is a big dickhead. Smile the next time you Red Sux you Major League ass wipe.
#15, Pettitte pitched a shutout into the 7th inning, and they still ended up losing the game. While Wang was dreadful and accounted for two of the three losses, the Yankees lost again because they could not hit.
They only had three innings with back to back hits THE ENTIRE SERIES. Thats three innings out of THIRTY SIX. What did the Indians do? Not only did they hit, they did it when they needed to.
Pitching is the number one most prized and most scarce commodity in baseball. If they could have gone out and bought pitchers they would have, and they did try. It just so happens the best pitchers available turned out to be bunk. There was no crystal ball to look in to tell them that Pavano would be a con artist, that Kei Igawa was in fact a little league BP pitcher.
The Yankees are actually stocked up with good young arms now. For some idiotic reason Joba Chamberlain is pitching out of the bullpen when he is supposed to be a starter. They need to bring Rivera back, and bring up all the kids. Hopefully Wang learned something from this, because he is a Cy Young and a WS MVP waiting to happen.
He clearly has confidence issues though, as evidenced by the huge disparity in his home / away record. Starting him on so much rest in Cleveland in Game 1 was really a much bigger gamble than it should have been. If he can toughen up after this, he will be the Yankees ace for many years to come.
Bottom line is this: the Yankees are primed to have a very very solid team in the next year or two. They need to resolve issues with their old dead weight players, namely Jason Giambi to make room on the roster for their young blood.
As for Torre, there are very good arguments both ways. I can't make up my mind, because he has driven me crazy with bad decisions as much as he's delighted me with his steady and subtle handling of the team over the years. Either way, I wish him the best.
As
"I'm not sure what other teams, besides the Red Sox, could pay him the kind of money he wants without completely decimating their team's chances in the process. For most other teams, A-Rod's salary is a massive chunk of the payroll."
cubs
"Redsux" and "Skankees" ... what is this, middle school?
Go TRIBE!!!! I love nothing more than seeing the pompous ass Yankees lose.
Since he's going to score a lot of goals this year, many of them probably coming against the Rangers, Devils and Islanders:
D-A-N-Y H-E-A-T-L-E-Y.
Yes, I know spelling "Danny" with one N looks stupid, but that's his name.
Torre's fatal flaw is his tendency not to see each pitch in the post-season as a make-or-break proposition, resulting in his team digging itself into bigger and bigger holes. The Indians series was filled with examples: leaving Wang in in game one until he gave up 8 runs, not responding to Joba's unsettled pitches during the gnat infestation and choosing Wang on three days rest, then letting him give up two runs. In what organization would a manager who does not protect the integrity of his organization be allowed to continue to manage?
baseball in NYC for 07 is officially a wash. we all sucked.
Trade Jeter.
Oh and BTW, the decision to pitch Wang last night was pushed onto Joe by the front office "brass", Joe apparently wanted to start Mussina.
"baseball in NYC for 07 is officially a wash. we all sucked."
I think you mean sports in NYC 07 is a wash.
He started it..!
#27 and #28 totally threw an otherwise interesting discussion out the windows. Please grow up.
I wonder how much money the Yankees payroll will be next year? If you thought the Curse of teh Bambino was harsh, well the Yankees are being inflicted with biblical plagues.
They have ruined baseball for many fans for many years. Any thing bad that happens to them they deserve.
GO RED SOX!
