Today is Columbus Day, which means that your employer is probably not giving you the day off (according to the Society for Human Resources Management) but many government offices and schools are closed. The stock market is open, some banks are closed while others are open, and alternate side of the street parking is suspended. Here's a list of closures, but this sort-of-holiday is confusing. And, of course, there is steady opposition to Columbus Day overall.
There is a Columbus Day Parade, which begins at 11:30AM, running on Fifth Avenue between 44th and 79th Streets. Here's more information from the Columbus Citizens Foundation.

only in a nation of idiots is this still considered a holiday in the year 2007...with a parade no less
My LIRR train this morning (7:32 Ronkonkoma to Penn) was somewhat less crowded than usual, same for the Ronkonkoma station parking lot, but the 1 train from Penn to Houston Street at around 9:00 was your proverbial ghost train. After 14th there were only four or five other people in the car.
yeah, I guess I appreciated the slightly less crowded trains this morning. From now on, Columbus day will simply be "Less of a pain in the ass to get to work Day" to me
I wonder how many billions of dollars are wasted because of this useless holiday that most people have to work. And if you go to work, don't expect any mail. Oh, forget about going to the bank, too.
Hell, the stock markets are not closed today and public transit is on a normal schedule. That should speak volumes. It is an absolute rubbish holiday, as those two examples prove. It should just be eliminated, not because of any "Columbus discovered nothing, because people were already here" arguments, but for the main reason that it is a financial hit and is annoying not to have basic services.
If the Italians want to have a day for a parade, let them. We don't need to shut down basic services for some sort of ethnic feel good day. We don't do it for St. Patrick's Day, which is not even an official holiday, for the Irish. We don't do it for any other ethnic day and we should not do it for this one so we don't have to wonder where the hell is the mail.
You can still have your parade, but for the love of dog let us have mail, open banks, and access to government services. Some bloke went on a boat trip and launched centuries of ethnic cleansing isn't something to celebrate and disrupt peoples lives in the process.
I am also for getting rid of all these other rubbish holidays where most people work and the government takes a snooze. Quite simply, if the financial markets don't take the day off, most people are don't have the day off and the trains run on the normal weekday schedule it is not really a holiday and should be eliminated. Does it really honor veterans by closing banks and not getting mail while everyone else works? No.
