Judith Supine Gives Mahatma a Makeover

2007_9_ghandi1.jpg

Judith Supine put up a devious little piece in Union Square this morning-- when we went over to check it out at 10am, no one, including the vendors set up around the statue, had noticed that the head had been altered. When we started shooting some pictures, a little crowd formed-- the general consensus was that it was a very well made piece. It's unlikely to last long, however-- so if you want to see it, better get down there fast.

GETTING BACK

Judith Supine's waxy candy

Adds her touch to Mahatma Gandhi.

Should she have original pieces,

I'd happily cover them with feces.

Fair is fair with an artist's work,

More so if she's a Pla-Dough jerk.

George Bush head on Gandhi--hmmmm

war monger and peace monger

This might be the biggest development in Union Square since Sane/Smith tagged the outside of the Brooklyn Bridge in the late-1980s!

I get it. Gandhi gets laid.

war monger and peace monger

The worst world leader today combined with the most overrated of the past century.

Ah, yes. Jake's monthly "street art" post on Gothamist, since he's obviously bored over at Streetsy and not getting enough hits there. That, and he's circle-jerking with his kewl buds in the "artistic" community. If Judith Supine wasn't such a self-serving, egomaniacal attention whore, then why doesn't he or she do a sculpture of his or her own instead of defacing someone else's, however temporarily? Same with all the other vandalistic jackasses. If you're so hot, go buy a canvas or marble or buy your own property. Paint or sculpt your own "art" and people will beat down your door to shove money in your hands. Oh, that's right. You suck. That's why nobody's paying for your work. Here's a clue: Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Picasso, Matisse and even Jackson Pollock never had to operate under the cover of night, not even when they were starting out. Either stand up and take credit (and blame) or STFU. Don't slap it on, run away like a coward and have someone else write up, "Judith Supine wuz here."

why is this listed in Art? this is a political statement. A faddish comment rather than making some lasting impression. but amusing.

WTF Spirit? Your irrelevance anxiety is probably better worked out in real life than in a blog comment box.

Great find, Jake.

It wasn't a "find". Jake's a promoter.

Sprit, I'm surprised to say I really do agree with you here. Except for the tasteless circle jerk remark.

It may be tasteless, but it's true, and I call them like I see them. Jake and his "street art" friends work hand in hand. They vandalize other people's property and notify him, then he glamorizes them on Streetsy, which gets him some traffic there. And every month or so, he pops over here to Gothamist, where the only stories he writes are about graffiti. I don't know if the proper term should be "promoter" or "accomplice." The only bright side is that he didn't plaster this article with six big pictures before the jump, as he sometimes likes to.

stfu spirit. Thanks for the street art reports jake.

It might be impermanent and the person who did it might consider it art (as might others) but I find it a little annoying. I have a lot of respect for Ghandi and I've always enjoyed seeing that statue and don't think the alteration is particularly clever. Or, if it matters to anyone, respectful.

user-pic

wait. How can gothamist condone this but say that Writing Jews and Swastikas on synagogues are bad? Jake dobkin and judith supine are in bed with one another

user-pic

you may call 'em as you see 'em but your degree of uptightness and anger about Jake crossposting something from streetsy once in a while is way out of proportion to any offense that he may have caused. Are you seriously that upset? It is hard to take your level of vitriol as anything other than a joke.

user-pic

It's such a hack job. Any idiot can take a George Bush Halloween mask, paint it grey and put it on a statue. Yeah, that's creative.

Why don't you make me, robingee? Oh, that's right. You have no power over me or anybody else. Too bad.

Aloha -- isn't that Hello and Goodbye in the same word?
