An explosion occurred at building on West 119th Street, right off Fifth Avenue and just south of Marcus Garvey Park, around 4PM. Several people were injured - WCBS 2 says that the injured include two babies and a firefighter who was helping people out of the building. Also: "Firefighters on the scene removed pieces of debris from the building's first floor while residents were being treated on stretchers on the street."
The situation was described as a "major collapse." It's unclear what caused the explosion in the occupied, five-story building.
WABC 7 has photographs at the scene.
Update: Newsday is reporting that this was a gas explosion at "an alleged illegal restaurant" and the bottom three floors of the building were blown out.
Update: CNN has word on the injuries: "One child was in critical condition and the three others were in serious condition, New York Fire Department Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta said... All four had burn injuries. One of the injured is an infant. A firefighter was also injured, but was in stable condition Saturday evening. He apparently was struck by falling debris, Scoppetta said."

Fox news has been suggesting that big explosions with no subsequent smoke/fire are characteristic of meth lab explosions.
I walked by on the 118th St side. One back apartment on the ground floor was blown out but it otherwise didn't look bad.
Nicholas Scoppetta. Say no more.

Meth labs are more like rural trailer camp things. You're not likely to find them in the city.
"not likely to find them in the city"
You are mistaken.

EXEC TURNS HIS PENTHOUSE INTO A METH LAB: FEDS

'HIGH' LIFE: Citigroup exec Michael Knibb is led in cuffs from his East Side building, where he had allegedly set up this "sophisticated" meth lab in his penthouse apartment (above).
Excerpt from NYPost article:
December 1, 2006 -- The trailer-park drug known as "hillbilly crack" has been putting on the Ritz lately - as federal drug agents uncovered a crystal-meth lab inside the $6,000-a-month Manhattan penthouse of a bank executive, authorities said yesterday.
Michael Knibb, an information-technology vice president at Citigroup, ran the sophisticated drug operation from the living room of his luxury apartment overlooking the United Nations, said Drug Enforcement Administration officials.
The 37-year-old Knibb - who makes an estimated $250,000 a year - allegedly told authorities that he had decided to make his own methamphetamines because he could not find a reliable drug dealer after moving to New York from Seattle two years ago.
I was in a neighboring building when the explosion occurred. I have to commend the NYPD and FDNY for getting to the scene so quickly - they were there maybe 1 minute after the explosion happened.
