Phoenix Police Release Video of Gotbaum's Arrest

2007_10_phxgot.jpg

The Phoenix police released surveillance video showing the arrest of Carol Anne Gotbaum, a New Yorker who later died in police custody at Phoenix's Sky Harbor airport. Gotbaum had been upset about missing a connection to Tucson, where she was planning on entering alcohol rehabilitation, and became very upset at the gate. In the video, airline personnel are seen trying to talk to Gotbaum (wearing a white shirt at the top of the screen) who seems to be yelling (there is no sound) and keeps backing away, until the police arrive. Here's the video of the arrest, plus a description from the Arizona Republic:

Police Officers Andrew Woyna, Duane Rigg and Dick Richards approached Gotbaum and asked her to calm down, the video shows. When she continued to yell, one of the officers moved to arrest her...

...Gotbaum went limp when the officer grabbed her, and police fell to the floor along with her. One of Gotbaum's arms became pinned under her body, forcing police to roll her slightly in order to take her into custody.

She was not wearing shoes at the time of the arrest, and her purse was left in the gate area. Only birth-control pills and Motrin were found in her purse.

Gotbaum continued resisting arrest as police attempted to move her to a holding room, according to footage from three airport security cameras. At some points, she locked her legs so that police had to pull her forward. The three video angles shown by police Thursday didn't have sound. But witness accounts state that Gotbaum repeatedly shouted "I'm not a terrorist!" and said she "hated . . . the (expletive) American cops."

Here's another video with additional angles. After being escorted through the airport, Gotbaum was put in a holding cell, handcuffed to a bench, and later died after apparently strangling herself with the chain, in a possible attempt to escape. She was not supervised, but the police say they checked on her every 15 minutes and that she died during one 5-10 minute interval. The police also say they performed CPR on her.

While this was happening, Gotbaum's husband Noah called the airport's switchboard multiple timse. He had spoken to his upset wife earlier and told an operator during one of the calls, "She is, uh, uh, alcohol abusive ... but she is also in [a] deep depression and ... the police have to understand that they're not dealing with ... some lout who's just drank too much on an airplane. That's not what's going on here. This woman is suicidal. And they need to ... deal with very kid gloves. They don't know what they're dealing with." The operator told him, "Unfortunately, [the police are] still doing the investigation . . . so where can I have them give you a call? It's unfortunate we're going to have to wait until they give you a call."

Noah Gotbaum called the airport switchboard many times, and it's unclear when exactly the later calls took place (and whether they were after his wife was dead), but during one, he said, "I suggest someone give me a call immediately!" At one point he said the police are "playing with real fire right now." The police spokesman Sergeant Andy Hill said, "The officers had no knowledge of any of Ms. Gotbaum's personal issues. They had not been apprised of any calls from the family to the airport seeking to locate Ms. Gotbaum."

The lawyer for the Gotbaum family, Michael Manning, said that an airline employee saw Carol Gotbaum being taken to the detention area "listless, unconscious to nearly unconscious." According to the NY Times, Manning is withholding the name of the witness, "but planned to eventually release to the police. Once the employee is ready to be identified, Mr. Manning said, 'I want Phoenix police to interview this witness. This is important."

The NY Times reported yesterday that Gotbaum was originally planning on taking a direct flight to Tucson but took the later flight with the connection in Phoenix because she wanted to say goodbye to her three children. The Gotbaums released a statement after claiming Carol Gotbaum's body:

"Noah Gotbaum, Carol Anne's husband, is in Phoenix today to accompany his wife's body back to New York City. The memorial service will be held Sunday in New York and the family will sit shiva in the days following. The family has asked that the media respect their privacy during this time of mourning and allow them to grieve in peace through this weekend. The family's attorneys and other representatives will honor this request, as well, and will give no media statements or interviews after today. The family hopes you understand."
The Post has a PDF of the police report. In the next few weeks, more extensive results from autopsies by the medical examiner as well as a private pathologist hired by the family are expected.

I hope justice is done in this case, but honestly I'm glad she was arrested. Nobody, man or woman, should be allowed to get that hysterical or obnoxious in public, especially in an airport.

P.S.: If she lived, this video would be on TMZ or Page Six.

Part of police training involves learning how to deal with the mentally ill. If you see a woman convulsing, screaming, and out of control, without any shoes, in the midst of a major panic attack, anyone who has any idea of what mental illness entails would have handled the situation differently. It is awful what has happened to this woman and her family, and the police should be held responsible. She was on her way to seek treatment for god's sake.

standard procedure for the AZ PD,
uncaring killing robots.

she should have been escorted the whole way...by her husband, family member, friend...pay someone to do it...anything

no excuse for letting her travel alone

i blame the the husband

sincerely,
judge wapner

Heartbreaking story. But if she was such a danger to herself, why was she traveling alone?

c'mon he's a helluva guy, he called didn't he?

is this over yet, we're wasting valuable gothamist space that could be better used describing some ridiculous hipster trend.

If it is Gothamist policy now to report on New Yorkers who die outside the five boroughs in strange circumstances, may I suggest you start reporting on New York City soldiers who die in combat in Iraq or Afghanistan. It can be easy to forget that there is a war going on and I think Gothamist can help put a face on this conflict. If you like, I can get you the names as they become available.

I heard on Ch11 news that someone was supposed to meet her at the airport but it didn't happen. Though the calls to the switchboard suggest the family knew the shit was hitting the fan.

One thing you see on the tape is that the security guys and the cops really didn't try to manage the situation on the floor and calm her down. The cops are there only a few seconds and then they are hauling her away. They say "we really didn't know about her situation" but how can you NOT tell she's disturbed from the tape?

what's with all the overweight cops?

fucking AZholes!

There is nothing strange about fighting a war. People get killed. War is fighting and fighting is dying. Here's a thought, if you dont want to fight in a war, dont join the military. If I dont like delivering packages, I dont get a job at Fed Ex. This woman is dead, and has nobody to blame but herself.

Too bad she didn't off herself. Then we wouldn't have to hear so much about her.

What are the Arizona PD hiding?
why are they so flippant and nonchalant over this incident?
Why are they preventing the Gotbaum's from getting more information. Why are they keeping it to themselves.
What are they hiding and protecting?

good suggestion GaryK

She looks good for her age, not like that photo that's everywhere. Crazy and skinny, just the way I like em.

I bet she died from mixing alcohol with her meds. The cops probably paniced and gave a bogus scenario of what happened.

We'll never really know what could have happened until the 2nd autopsy is run.

You gotta read the AZ local press coverage. Apparently, they rebooked her on a flight that left an hour later. They also gave her a free round trip flight voucher. She then tried to trade her voucher with a passenger that was allowed to board and use their ticket to board the plane. When she wasn't allowed, that's when the sh*t hit the fan. That's why they called the cops, because you know...she tried to BREACH SECURITY.

the cop's name is NOT Dick Richards???

$42,000 a month for rehab and her winner husband couldn't afford to fly with her? Get a sitter for the kids?

He and step-momma Betsey are probably doing a jig. She no longer has a nutso relative in her campaign closet, she's engendered sympathy and can take this money to use in her run for mayor.

"but the police say they checked on her every 15 minutes and that she died during one 5-10 minute interval. The police also say they performed CPR on her."

They performed CPR after they discovered that she was dead???

Mentally ill or not, she should NOT have been travelling alone.

If she were to act out like this on an airplane during the flight, she could have caused a major disturbance and hurt others besides herself.

If you want to blame this on anyone, blame the woman's family.
The husband said she was suicidal and an alcoholic.
So they send her all alone to travel to a treatment facility?

Thats nuts.

Even if she did get the beatdown, the bych deserved it. The world would be a better place without her...matter of fact, the world would be a much better place without ANY of these arrogant troublemakers....

#17, don't forget she was abusive to other passengers; pushing them and throwing objects.

This in addition to trying to breach security.

And for those people complaining about Gothamist's coverage... this psycho is the daughter-in-law of a NYC public official. That's what makes this a local story.

Someone should audit Betsy Gottbaum's office to see if she's using public funds to try to embarrass the hard working police officers in Arizona.

You know, it is just sad to see how none of you have ever been mistreated by the cops. Or know someone who died because of it. Keep living your white dream, assholes.

This is officially out of control.

Of COURSE they removed from the floor immediately. Would you want a scene like that playing out in an airport in post-9/11 America? Everyone is already tense. The cops were protecting the public by getting her out of there as quickly as possible. The cop bashing is really undeserved in my opinion.

They reported that she vomited during CPR which meant she must have still been alive. So everyone can just stop with the she-is-sead-because-they-left-her-alone bit. She wasn't dead and they tried to save her.

And why was she traveling alone (that's a great point!)? Her family will no doubt sue now, and I think this should be held against them in a major way if they try to profit from her death. They are at least partly responsible.

I just wanted to comment on phoenix tv showing a video of the family picking up Carol's body at the morgue. This was a class act and showed what phoenix must think of all travelers and the rest of the US. Instead of building a fence around Mexico, is there a way to build the fence clear around arizona and cap it with a bubble so that the rest of the human population doesn't have to become infected with whatever disease these people obviously have.

Also isn't odd that the only video showing the arrest and Carol on the ground is shot from an ant's
point of view.

traveling alone is a crime now? a crime worthy of death?
so if a little boy or girl who's traveling alone and has a tantrum, they should die, too.

Because of the husband's money grubbing ways, trying to profit off his wife's death by slandering and suing decent hard working officers; the children have to live knowing their mother was a totally hysterical psycho bitch who got herself killed by mixing drugs with alcohol, and attacking innocent passengers.

It's a shame. The Phoenix PD obviously didn't want to release this in public, and offered to give it privately to the family.

The family pushed it, slandered the police, and now the video is out in the open.

That husband is shameless and obviously loves money more than the good name of his wife.

Looks to me from the video that the AZ police acted completely appropriately. She's shouting at the top of her lungs, acting completely nuts. The cops show up, talk to her, try to calm her down (from their hand gestures, it seems) and she goes backing away and screaming again. The cops then get her on the ground and cuff her. Simple as that.

Here's a bit of info for you. When you have to handcuff someone who doesn't want to be cuffed, being genteel doesn't work.

You cop haters really piss me off sometimes. Yes, there's police brutality, but your generalizations are as bad as some collective racist tirade.

While I fee bad for her family, there several thigs from this video that i saw (obviously not heard).

It was very apparent she was screaming and exulting a tremendous amount of energy to do so, it looked a lot like a 5-year-old throwing a tantrum in a toy store.

Airport security and several passerby's tried to calm her down to no avail. The police arrived apparently trying to talk her down (without touching her), she continued the tantrum disturbing the peace and clearly scaring other passengers passing by. This kind of behavior for an adult is unacceptable.

She was able to travel that far to Phoenix by herself why the sudden breakdown? Missed her flight? Wait for another flight, read a book, take a nap, call a relative.

The part I cannot understand, is that her family and friends are saying she was suicidal heading to alcohol rehab and by herself. Perhaps someone, maybe her husband or close relative, should have been traveling by her side. You do not under any circumstances let a suicidal person travel alone. All the more reason for the police to arrest and detain her; she was a threat to her own security and the security of an airport.

No one at the time knew who she was or what she may have been capable of regardless of her frailty (which I also do not buy, if you're frail and weak, you do not exert forceful energy on a tantrum). She was acting like a coke addict in a rage which can turn a 100lbs person into a freight train.

Again, condolences to her family, but seriously folks, accountability... Maybe the police should not have left her alone in the holding cell, but then again, her family left her alone all along. Do the math.

Again, again, again - I want to hear from the family why she was traveling alone. Yes, the husband says he had to stay with the kids, but grandma Betsy lives a couple of blocks away...why couldn't she pick them up from school? This whole thing reeks. They clearly knew how serious her situation was if they told the airport that she was suicidal. And where is the supposed "friend" who didn't show up?

slandered the Police officers? this was the first time we heard of officer dick richards. they refused to release any of that information.
this is why I dance my Radio City music hall AND Madison Square Garden Lord of th Dance Flatley Jig
whenever a cop dies or has Karma handed to them bitch slap style.
and, I love to dance that Jig every single time it happens.

for, like the hundredth time, friends were supposed to meet her at the airport and didn't show. there was a plan to have people be with her during the layover.

Well there you go, the woman was cursing at the cops, drunk on her way to rehab and the husband threatens the switchboard.

I like that the family first said she hadn't taken her medicine that day. From the contents of her purse it seems that she didn't intend to take any medicine besides birth control pills. (In rehab?)

How did the cops not know that this was just a distraction and that REAL TERRORIST were plotting somewhere else in the airport. I think they did the right thing is getting her out of the public area. She is lucky she wasn't with the New York CIty Police where they shoot first and ask questions later.

Are all of you judging her (saying that she had it coming) simply perfect human beings with no flaws in your lives? Do you not have any family/friends who have had problems with alcohol or depression? What happened appears to be a very sad accident and I find it pretty pathetic that some of you see this as a big joke and even worse a reason for you to get on your highorse and preach. Check out Paul Krugmans op-ed in the Times today. You are no different then those republicans who seem to enjoy and joke about the misery of those experiencing hard times.

Gary, great suggestion. I agree that sometimes this blog (as a general ny news blog) pays little attention to the effects of the war on those who live here unless it's related to a protest.

Also very interesting that DAYS after her death and family arrival here, they've spent every day doing press releases and interviews and now suddenly when the police provide video of arrest and transcript of husband's acknowledgement that she WAS KNOWN to be out of control (hmmm...hadn't stepmommy-in-law been saying what a peaceful woman she was???? obviously hubby knew better)...now suddenly they want to be left alone by the media "to grieve".
You weren't much interested in grieving those first few days, but now that the investigation isn't quite going your way you need privacy! Sorry, you opened this can of worms, so until you publicly apologize to the City of Phoenix and PD you're fair game....and don't get days and days to regroup and change your story to fit the new proof.

It's amazing how people don't realize that they can't lie in public anymore. There is too much big brother cameras watching you everywhere, and phone calls being recorded for security. They should have come here to investigate quietly and cooperatively with authorities to be sure that things were handled...I totally would appreciate their need to do that for their own peace of mind....but the MIL who is a big public figure should be smarter and realize she wasn't going to be able to bamboozle her way in...she should have known there could be video/transcripts, etc.

adios, lady. too bad about the lost life. but if not for her own actions, it never would have happened. i love blaming the fuzz as much as the next guy, but crazy got what she had coming...

If any male had pulled a stunt like that, they would have been beaten into the floor by the police.

You do not fuck around in Airports.

Lets repeat that: YOU DO NOT FUCK AROUND IN AIRPORTS.

If these people could afford 42G's for a single month of rehab treatment, they could afford to charter her a damn flight from New York out west.

Having watched the video, I think the cops were actually pretty mild in the way they dealt with it. There wasn't nearly as much body slamming and knees to the back of the neck as usually goes on.

Yes, #33, a friend was supposed to meet her. But how is that remotely sufficient, when the family already knows she is "out of control" and desperately seeking treatment? Without detracting from how awful it is to lose a family member, had her family THOUGHT AHEAD and been there with her, this might've been avoided. Bottom line is - as many other commenters have said - in this "day and age", an out of control woman like that is a danger, especially when trying to breach security (as she did). They'd already given her vouchers and free perks - she isn't the first person to have gotten bumped, and if her mental state was so unruly that she couldn't have dealt with the bump rationally, well, she shouldn't have been traveling alone. Period.

"You know, it is just sad to see how none of you have ever been mistreated by the cops. Or know someone who died because of it. Keep living your white dream, assholes"

This is utterly ridiculous. This doesn't have the appearance of being a situation where somebody was railroaded or taken advantage of by the cops. All the evidence I've seen thus far is that this was a PRIVILEGED WHITE WOMAN who pitched a tremendous, violent, childish fit and got what she deserved (not death, but being restrained).

I understand that some people have a healthy distrust of cops. That's fine. It's pretty absurd to suggest that cops are completely unnecessary in society. Do you think that the police are NEVER in the right when something bad happens?

Ron Paul is right. America is now a Police State. Ron Paul...I hope you survive, unlike Paul Wellstone, who was killed for telling the it the way it is.

A truly heartbreaking story. :(

God bless you Carol Anne Gotbaum.

Another sad statistic. You were so unfortunate when at your lowest ebb, you happened to confront macho assholes with badges. You needed help and reassurance, not to be wrestled to the ground and had trussed up.

God bless you pet.

War abroad - War at home.
That's how it works.

Hatred of liberal democrats has obviously prejudiced many from an objective or even compassionate point of view. May you be judged as you judge others.

Ok, so friends were supposed to meet her and didn't. How is this relevant? Will you now blame traffic conditions or a possible flat tire enroute to the airport?

How was she stable on the actual flight? (flights alone make me nuts) being in a safe environment [airport] makes me feel safer than being 35K ft above earth.

So her friends do not show and this is a reason to fly off the handle, to break laws and act disorderly on a suicidal level?

No.

Bottom line, her immediate family is responsible for her, not strangers at an airport. She and her family are accountable for 100% of her actions.

No one here is being objective anymore. Let's wait for the facts to play out before we jump to any more conclusions.

Maybe Gothamist should make their next update comment-blocked like their interviews?

actually, I really liked today's interview guest.
he has really honest answers. none of that fake funny sarcastic jokey answers.
No one expects a person who's detained in a cell to die. too bad, we can't see what really happened.
they only gave us that videotape to show that they were being tolerant. but what really happened in that "holding cell" which is actually a locked room.
No windows on the doors, how can one see what's happening?
The cops are hiding something and the whole nation is watching.

It's the equivalent of Road Rage -- complete with the possibly of the person throwing the fit accidentally killing herself in the process -- but with far less social disapproval of the behavior. The bad guys are everyone else.

Yeah everyone stop jumping to conclusions but let the family's lawyer Manning keep coming out with sensational accusations that he can't back up with a witness who will come forward or that evidence later released shows was not what he said. Great guy, real hero there.

Rocco--

Honestly, I'm tired of the commenters saying "All cops are bad." I'm tired of their lawyer making subtle insinuations to influence the media climate without any reference to the facts.

I'm just trying to see the other perspective too. It's sad that this woman died and it is true that there have, historically, been cases of police brutality and coverups.

From what I've seen so far, it doesn't look like that's what happened, but I've adopted a wait and see attitude until we get more information.

I'd like to know how she died. This tape doesn't tell us any of that. I've been arrested twice, and each time I was taken out of handcuffs before being placed in a holding cell. If she was goo violent to be taken out of handcuffs, then she was too violent to be left unsupervised.

I am saddened at the callous indifference to the loss of life, any life. My dad told me there were so many people in China, that Mao had the elderly killed just because they were old and weak. I see us heading in that direction from the disdain for the weak, mentally ill, and from the comments regarding a woman who was alive and is now dead. She is no longer here. Her family are grieving the loss of a mother, a wife, a daughter, and her friends are grieving the loss of a friend. But go back and read the comments on the loss of life.

The sole person responsible for this is Carol Anne Gotbaum. However, I find it odd her family did not travel with her if she was suicidal, but maybe she insisted on going alone. I'm sure there is so much sad family history here with her outbreaks and abrasive drunk personality. I assume they didn't think she was suicidal though when she left. Maybe she hadn't been on a binge in awhile and was only suicidal when she was plastered. I would guess they know they should have traveled with her and have to lash out at someone other than themselves. Plus, if you're from a very rich prominent family, you don't make mistakes - it's always someone else's fault.

How sad her children will only have memories of her as a drunk and not as a recovering alcoholic.

Why was she traveling ALONE? The husband is the guilty thing here.

Phoenix police had the daughter of the currently acting Mayor of New York, while Bloomberg is away, die in their custody. They're statements are to taken with a grain of salt, especially considering their history on telling the truth.

It's business as usual for the Phoenix police. Too bad, this 41 year old man, albeit a criminal, wasn't also well connected. This one will be swept under the rug.

No way! another person dies while in custody by the Tuscon PD?

No, by the Phoenix police. I linked to Tucson Citizen report. Here's a link:

Look,
As someone who works for an NYC Agency that investigates allegations of police misconduct, I can say that after viewing what I was able to see of the video tape, the police acted within their authority to arrest Ms. Gotbaum and did so using a minimum amount of force. She did resist the officers and she was creating a disturbance in a busy part of the airport. It is a tragedy that she died, but let's not forget that she was an independent agent in this situation and that she is ultimately responsible for her conduct. Now, as for wht happened in the cells, I cannot be sure as there are not (and rightfully so) camera's in the cell area of the airport's command. Let's save the "fascist" comments for a situation that actually merits it, and let's all treat another adult like an adult and stop minimizing her responsibility for being arrested. And lastly, her lawyer's description of the police's tactics as "tackled, shackle, and cuff," are ridiculous. She was never tackled, she clerly dropped to the ground to evade arrest. Let's please, please, be adults and stop blaming the arresting officers for doing their job in what appears to be professional manner.

didn't you just post this same comment yesterday?
what does the AZ PD have to hide?
you mean another person died under custody by the Phoenix PD? Unbelievable.

Ron Paul is the Republican who is using the term Police State. Who am I to argue with a Republican who is condemning the current war on terror results on our freedoms here in the U.S.
Did you hear about the woman who had to remove her bra in before entering the Federal Courthouse in Boise?
Did you hear about the good samaritan who didn't have ID and was arrested? How many people do you think have been arrested just because they did not give a police officer their name?
Have you seen the videos on Prisonplanet.com?

Jesus look at all the tubby people in that airport.

Oh I'm tired of BOTH of yuhs-- ya big New York crybabies AND ya Mid-America whitebread creeps. You're both strutting bullies in your own way, and you have no idea how the rest of humanity views you. Let's face it, this woman seems to exemplify all that is so incredibly smackable about modern New Yorkers. Let's also face that since one of the phrases she was yelling was "I hate the fuckin American cops", this probably was received as justification by the friggin Captain Americas seen in the tape, and others back at the "station". to whup on her. A pox on both your houses. I know all about reasonable heartless bastards like you.

Why you never fly alone to rehab:
1.)Airlines offer drinks on board
2.)Flying is stressful
3.)Airports are full of bars

Good lord - she was not tackled or wrestled to the ground - she VIOLENTLY resisted arrest and did so throughout the short trip to the cell.

She should not have died, but her behaviour, even for a drunk, was that of a tantrum throwing toddler.
Personal responsibility is a good thing

I love how through all the debate, I can still laugh so hard I practically pee my pants when someone says "Jesus look at all the tubby people in that airport"

Police brutality at airports is out of control. Especially when the police beat up/kill young women and mothers. This is similar to the police beating of the young woman at Reagan National Airport in DC except she suffered brain damage and is still alive. My thoughts and prayers go out to Carol Ann Gotbaum's family. http://youtube.com/watch?v=XPNmxZwhMag
