Baby Dies in Brooklyn Fire

2007_09_outlet.jpgA family is mourning the death of a 7-month-old boy who died during an electrical fire on East 3rd Street yesterday morning. The Fire Department believes that the fire was caused by a "faulty timer that was rigged to an air conditioner in the baby's third-floor room."

The Daily News explains that the family, the Goldmans, are Orthodox Jews who were observing Succoth. They had recently purchased a an electrical timer for the baby's AC unit, because they would not be able to touch electrical appliances during the holiday. But the timer was "not meant to be used with such a powerful appliance and was quickly overloaded." Additionally, the house did not have working smoke detectors. Firefighters broke through the roof of the house to reach the baby's room, but were unable to save him.

The child's mother Raysa Goldman tried to reach the baby's third-floor bedroom, but there was too much smoke. She did manage to save five other children. The family will have to wait for Succoth to end before they can mourn or bury the baby.

Last week, 12-year-old boy, his aunt and grandmother were killed in a fire, caused by faulty wiring, in Flatbush; the boy died while trying to save others. Here is the FDNY's safety website.

alot of people here are big idiots complaining about the race, a baby died and thats very sad no one wants to lose a child, so they made a mistake they didnt no that was going to happen.no one nos the future,so who ever is posting nasty comments screw yourself and stop it.

How many of these stories do we have to read before people buy and maintain fucking smoke alarms?! They are sold all over the place, so there is no excuse.

very good point, the jeckyl and hyde troll/guest.

maybe one should get two accounts, one for good insightful, respectful and knowledgeable posts and one for the vile, hateful and useless posts.

anyway, this will all die down, it's just the ebb and flow of forums. Old posters leave, new posters join. as long as it doesn't get to be CL or Yahoo where it's so large and unmanageable that it's hard getting any type of worthwhile comments.

I'm not saying they should get rid of guest comments. I'm saying that the people who post useful/interesting/insightful stuff under a guest account are doing themselves a huge disservice because those of us who've registered have no way of knowing if the guy posting something rational in one thread is the same one who was railing on about hating jews in another thread.

I just said that I wish more people would register so I at least know who's worth paying attention to.

    maybe not blatant racist remarks,

but some really vile stuff is posted by registered users. the vile and hatred is unbelievable.

the fact that it spews out so easily is disturbing.

    very easily, in fact.

    That's just me, of course.

    you people are heartless

need i remind you of the Holocaust?

    we've suffered enough

  • S.D.

Maybe Gothamist can try it for a couple of days.

  • Elderta

Haven't read too many registered folks spew the racist crap that many guests do. Show me one, #50 that's ever been the equivalent of say, #24 on this thread. And what's worse, less traffic or being seen as a vile, racist, and nasty website? I'd go with the former. That's just me, of course.

    # 38 I'll call you on your hipster bullshit.......get a job and stop having mommy and daddy send me your rent checks.

I like Jen and Jake, hope there's no changes coming.

sure it looks bad but it's not that bad.

Vile and venom comes from registered users and guests. even veteran users spew disgusting vile.

to paraphrase what was written in the news article linked. God Takes and God Gives. He took this time.

    oh really, mihow,

like your compassion for the bum in your photos.

so what, you had a boy, big deal.

I'm tired of people having one kid and all of a sudden it's mr/mrs tough guy.

disable guest comments = 50% traffic loss

    your call gothamist

  • Wickedson

Don't get rid of the guest comments!

    They make me laugh.

This is a terrible, terrible thing. I recently had a baby boy. I can't imagine losing a baby. The thought almost brings me to my knees. I would not wish to go on living if something like this happen to my son. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. So, religious beliefs aside, this is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a person. People aren't supposed to outlive their children. Period. Shame on all you compassionless idiots.

Lastly, I'm another person in favor of doing away with guest commenting. They are just pure nonsense and hopefully the folks who do have something to say (other than the usual racist and/or hateful stuff) then they'll sign up and use an actual email address. Enough of this crap already. Most of the guests are trolls anyway. Chances are they don't feel that way in real life, they're only doing it to start shit. So, let's get rid of them, no?

And if someone really does having something to say and they don't wish to have their name used perhaps they can email Jake or Jen directly and have them post it anonymously? I don't know. I'm trying to figure out the worth behind allowing for guest commenting. I don't see it right now. (Then again, usually I have them turned off.)

why does the baby needed to be buried in Israel?

#38 calling the Jews on their bullshit while living in Williamsburg as their tenants....Who's hip now??

  • S.D.

Really have to agree with Elderta.

Too many people hide behind the anonymous nature of "Guest" access.

A child is dead and idiots use it to vent their antisemitism, "Hipster" crap and "Darwin" comments. Can't wait for that "Karma" Jackass to make an appearance...

If I were Gothamist, I think I'd rather have build my traffic around quality discussion amongst registered members, rather than just driving up traffic by allowing people to spew whatever hateful bile they feel like.

And anyone who says there's no difference between registered users and guests is full of shit. Even if you don't use a revealing username (which I do), you're still held accountable for your words. At least if I see the same idiotic, racist bullshit coming from the same name over and over, I can form a specific opinion of the person bearing that name. Right now, that name is "guest."
