Baby Dies in Brooklyn Fire

2007_09_outlet.jpgA family is mourning the death of a 7-month-old boy who died during an electrical fire on East 3rd Street yesterday morning. The Fire Department believes that the fire was caused by a "faulty timer that was rigged to an air conditioner in the baby's third-floor room."

The Daily News explains that the family, the Goldmans, are Orthodox Jews who were observing Succoth. They had recently purchased a an electrical timer for the baby's AC unit, because they would not be able to touch electrical appliances during the holiday. But the timer was "not meant to be used with such a powerful appliance and was quickly overloaded." Additionally, the house did not have working smoke detectors. Firefighters broke through the roof of the house to reach the baby's room, but were unable to save him.

The child's mother Raysa Goldman tried to reach the baby's third-floor bedroom, but there was too much smoke. She did manage to save five other children. The family will have to wait for Succoth to end before they can mourn or bury the baby.

Last week, 12-year-old boy, his aunt and grandmother were killed in a fire, caused by faulty wiring, in Flatbush; the boy died while trying to save others. Here is the FDNY's safety website.

alot of people here are big idiots complaining about the race, a baby died and thats very sad no one wants to lose a child, so they made a mistake they didnt no that was going to happen.no one nos the future,so who ever is posting nasty comments screw yourself and stop it.

  • guest

How many of these stories do we have to read before people buy and maintain fucking smoke alarms?! They are sold all over the place, so there is no excuse.

  • guest

very good point, the jeckyl and hyde troll/guest.

maybe one should get two accounts, one for good insightful, respectful and knowledgeable posts and one for the vile, hateful and useless posts.

anyway, this will all die down, it's just the ebb and flow of forums. Old posters leave, new posters join. as long as it doesn't get to be CL or Yahoo where it's so large and unmanageable that it's hard getting any type of worthwhile comments.

  • cwbuecheler

I'm not saying they should get rid of guest comments. I'm saying that the people who post useful/interesting/insightful stuff under a guest account are doing themselves a huge disservice because those of us who've registered have no way of knowing if the guy posting something rational in one thread is the same one who was railing on about hating jews in another thread.

I just said that I wish more people would register so I at least know who's worth paying attention to.

  • guest

    maybe not blatant racist remarks,

but some really vile stuff is posted by registered users. the vile and hatred is unbelievable.

the fact that it spews out so easily is disturbing.

    very easily, in fact.

    That's just me, of course.

  • guest

    you people are heartless

need i remind you of the Holocaust?

    we've suffered enough

  • S.D.

Maybe Gothamist can try it for a couple of days.

  • Elderta

Haven't read too many registered folks spew the racist crap that many guests do. Show me one, #50 that's ever been the equivalent of say, #24 on this thread. And what's worse, less traffic or being seen as a vile, racist, and nasty website? I'd go with the former. That's just me, of course.

  • guest

    # 38 I'll call you on your hipster bullshit.......get a job and stop having mommy and daddy send me your rent checks.

    Mr. Roperwitz

  • guest

I like Jen and Jake, hope there's no changes coming.

sure it looks bad but it's not that bad.

Vile and venom comes from registered users and guests. even veteran users spew disgusting vile.

to paraphrase what was written in the news article linked. God Takes and God Gives. He took this time.

  • guest

    oh really, mihow,

like your compassion for the bum in your photos.

so what, you had a boy, big deal.

I'm tired of people having one kid and all of a sudden it's mr/mrs tough guy.

  • guest

disable guest comments = 50% traffic loss

    your call gothamist

  • Wickedson

Don't get rid of the guest comments!

    They make me laugh.

  • mihow

This is a terrible, terrible thing. I recently had a baby boy. I can't imagine losing a baby. The thought almost brings me to my knees. I would not wish to go on living if something like this happen to my son. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. So, religious beliefs aside, this is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a person. People aren't supposed to outlive their children. Period. Shame on all you compassionless idiots.

Lastly, I'm another person in favor of doing away with guest commenting. They are just pure nonsense and hopefully the folks who do have something to say (other than the usual racist and/or hateful stuff) then they'll sign up and use an actual email address. Enough of this crap already. Most of the guests are trolls anyway. Chances are they don't feel that way in real life, they're only doing it to start shit. So, let's get rid of them, no?

And if someone really does having something to say and they don't wish to have their name used perhaps they can email Jake or Jen directly and have them post it anonymously? I don't know. I'm trying to figure out the worth behind allowing for guest commenting. I don't see it right now. (Then again, usually I have them turned off.)

    ISRAEL=EAST BROOKLYN

  • guest

why does the baby needed to be buried in Israel?

  • guest

#38 calling the Jews on their bullshit while living in Williamsburg as their tenants....Who's hip now??

  • S.D.

Really have to agree with Elderta.

Too many people hide behind the anonymous nature of "Guest" access.

A child is dead and idiots use it to vent their antisemitism, "Hipster" crap and "Darwin" comments. Can't wait for that "Karma" Jackass to make an appearance...

  • guest

#38 calling the Jews on their bullshit while living in Williamsburg as their tenants.

  • cwbuecheler

If I were Gothamist, I think I'd rather have build my traffic around quality discussion amongst registered members, rather than just driving up traffic by allowing people to spew whatever hateful bile they feel like.

And anyone who says there's no difference between registered users and guests is full of shit. Even if you don't use a revealing username (which I do), you're still held accountable for your words. At least if I see the same idiotic, racist bullshit coming from the same name over and over, I can form a specific opinion of the person bearing that name. Right now, that name is "guest."

  • guest

Jen, you forgot to add the words "oy vey!" to the headline.

The one good thing about most hipsters is that they can see through all the jew bullshit that has brainwashed most native New Yorkers. Histers aren't afraid to call the jews on their bullshit, just like they arent afraid to call the blacks on their bullshit either.

If gothamist ever dared to remove the guest comments, or race-bait these articles, their traffic would drop by at least 50%.

Ever since Yahoo! removed their comments, their traffic dropped. Gothamist knows better.

  • guest

so i register an accoutn using a fake name and an anonymous gmail account...how will that make me post any differently?

    stupid

  • guest

i guess its part of the cost of being the chosen people!

  • guest

If they were black or latino I would understand, but...??

  • guest

Sure eliminate the guest comments but at the same time list the home phone numbers of the registered members in case there needs to be any further off line discussions.

  • guest

how bout using less electrical appliances or items?

I like the FDNY response, A faulty timer that was rigged to an air conditioner in the baby's third floor room.

A faulty timer and it was rigged.

I'm one of the Non-Jews who use an AC timer to cool my apartment before I get home. I also use a 20 amp rated heavy duty outdoor extension cord.

The AC timer was not cheap but I liked the programable features.

  • guest

    i hope they sue ConED

    The A/C manufacturer

    The timer manufacturer

FDNY for not responding in time

    this is inexcusable!!!

  • cwbuecheler

I'm reminded that I probably should go plug my smoke detector back in. We have to unplug ours every time we sautee anything in our kitchen.

  • guest

The LES?? Um, this is 2007, not 1907...

  • JRod5417

The pattern on the Gothamist is that no matter what the story is about, someone will eventually relate it to race. Having guest comments only encourages that since its so easy to spew venom anonymously. This is a tragedy. A baby died this week, last week it was a 12 year old boy, earlier this year it was a family in the Bronx. Regardless of race, this is something that is occuring often enough that we really can't argue this happened because so and so is Jewish, black, an immigrant, etc. Let's call it what it is. A senseless death caused by bad judgment.

  • guest

No surprise here - inbreeding is apparently rampant in these sectors. You ever take a close look at a lot of these little kids down in the LES..?!

  • guest

we have wired in alarms with battery backup

    thats the way to go

  • guest

I am just shocked by the many anti-semitic comments here, no matter how true they may be.

  • guest

These people actually smell worst than blacks. Does the Talmud limit the number of baths you can take per week?

  • AHT

Just like in the tragic fire in the Bronx last spring, the common thread here is a lack of smoke detectors. The anonymous nitwit commenters can fall over themselves to dish out all the stupidity they want, but when they're done they should go check the batteries in their own smoke detectors -- they should be changed twice a year, and it's recommended to do it with the change of the clocks, to make it easier to remember.

And Gothamist, maybe an edit to this to remind people to go check their own smoke detectors? Faulty and misused appliances happen all the time -- frayed cords, insufficient air circulation, and poor or overloaded wiring/equipment can all lead to this sort of situation, and it happens often. Working smoke detectors can help ensure that even if a home is damaged or lost the residents can get out safely.

  • guest

The hasids have a higher welfare rate than the blacks. I know it... it's shocking but true. They breed like roaches, and the women sign up for welfare.

It's sad that a baby died, but as a taxpayer, I rejoice.

  • guest

if gothamist removes guest comments, it will see less traffic

  • guest

Baby wouldn't have missed out on much. He probably would have spent the rest of his life working in Uncle Hezekiah's butcher shop - and who wants to spend the rest of his life dressed up as a freak anyways?

  • guest

these are the Super Super Jews.

  • Elderta

Well, hopefully Gothamist can speed up the demise of guest comments, which I have read is happening soonish.

  • guest

    one less welfare recipient

  • guest

most of the negative comments are not anti-semitism but anti-idiocy. the jewish part is basically just the identifier of the phrase. dumb fucking heebs.

  • guest

#13, thats the same viewpoint as many of the guest comments...why are those "stupid, ignorant, racist and offensive"

i happen to agree with your second paragraph

  • guest

It's just Darwinism doing it's magic, people - we all come out ahead in the long run...

  • cwbuecheler

The guest commentary on Gothamist is basically a big contest to see who can be the most stupid, ignorant, racist and offensive. I wish the very rare guests with something of value to say would register so I could know to not skim their commentary.

It's a shame what happened. I do not personally have any faith and generally feel that religious traditions are a little foolish, but people should be allowed to follow their religions without it, you know ... killing their babies.

  • guest

    It's 2007 people!

  • guest

what if this baby was the messiah!!!

    oh no!

  • guest

Hey, at least they have five other kids - God willing, she should pop a few more out by decade's end...

  • guest

uh, unless the timer is built into the AC...u should not be using an outlet timer for such a purpose...no matter what your stupid religion is

  • guest

The Amish are progressive compared to these nitwits...

  • guest

What the hell are you all talking about? I swear, there is this huge percentage of Gothamist readers who just can’t wait for some race, color, culture, religion or sexual orientation to be mentioned so they can start up with the “__________ are so __________” posts.

Do you idiots have any idea how many non-Jews use timers to turn on air conditioning units an hour before they get home so they don’t waste energy all day, but still have the house cool when they show up?

Somebody’s baby died. What’s wrong with you?

  • guest

    i cannot beleive the anti-semitism!

    have you no compassion

    a BABY died!!!

  • guest

the saddest shit is that the mother is a high school principal!!!! what the fuck are they teaching at that school?

  • guest

jews don't understand that their bodies conduct and generate electricity? and that they are human batteries? Succoth is stupid. I remember in college a whole bunch of jews protested having to walk through a automatic door. I was like "you are in fucking college and you come here with that shit?"

  • Reality Czech

    Religion kills yet another person.

  • guest

    Dumb jews

  • guest

i feel very sorry for the baby, he had to say in his parent's religious ways

thats why you shouldn't "cheat" and try to bypass rules.

either follow strictly or , like a rational person, use your damn hands to turn on/off an air conditioner
