A family is mourning the death of a 7-month-old boy who died during an electrical fire on East 3rd Street yesterday morning. The Fire Department believes that the fire was caused by a "faulty timer that was rigged to an air conditioner in the baby's third-floor room."
The Daily News explains that the family, the Goldmans, are Orthodox Jews who were observing Succoth. They had recently purchased a an electrical timer for the baby's AC unit, because they would not be able to touch electrical appliances during the holiday. But the timer was "not meant to be used with such a powerful appliance and was quickly overloaded." Additionally, the house did not have working smoke detectors. Firefighters broke through the roof of the house to reach the baby's room, but were unable to save him.
The child's mother Raysa Goldman tried to reach the baby's third-floor bedroom, but there was too much smoke. She did manage to save five other children. The family will have to wait for Succoth to end before they can mourn or bury the baby.
Last week, 12-year-old boy, his aunt and grandmother were killed in a fire, caused by faulty wiring, in Flatbush; the boy died while trying to save others. Here is the FDNY's safety website.

The guest commentary on Gothamist is basically a big contest to see who can be the most stupid, ignorant, racist and offensive. I wish the very rare guests with something of value to say would register so I could know to not skim their commentary.
It's a shame what happened. I do not personally have any faith and generally feel that religious traditions are a little foolish, but people should be allowed to follow their religions without it, you know ... killing their babies.

Just like in the tragic fire in the Bronx last spring, the common thread here is a lack of smoke detectors. The anonymous nitwit commenters can fall over themselves to dish out all the stupidity they want, but when they're done they should go check the batteries in their own smoke detectors -- they should be changed twice a year, and it's recommended to do it with the change of the clocks, to make it easier to remember.
And Gothamist, maybe an edit to this to remind people to go check their own smoke detectors? Faulty and misused appliances happen all the time -- frayed cords, insufficient air circulation, and poor or overloaded wiring/equipment can all lead to this sort of situation, and it happens often. Working smoke detectors can help ensure that even if a home is damaged or lost the residents can get out safely.

The pattern on the Gothamist is that no matter what the story is about, someone will eventually relate it to race. Having guest comments only encourages that since its so easy to spew venom anonymously. This is a tragedy. A baby died this week, last week it was a 12 year old boy, earlier this year it was a family in the Bronx. Regardless of race, this is something that is occuring often enough that we really can't argue this happened because so and so is Jewish, black, an immigrant, etc. Let's call it what it is. A senseless death caused by bad judgment.

I'm one of the Non-Jews who use an AC timer to cool my apartment before I get home. I also use a 20 amp rated heavy duty outdoor extension cord.
The AC timer was not cheap but I liked the programable features.
Sure eliminate the guest comments but at the same time list the home phone numbers of the registered members in case there needs to be any further off line discussions.

#32, are you serious? You couldn't really bring a suit for anything (at least for anything that has been stated in the article). If they were using a timer that couldn't handle the load of the AC unit, then they (the family) are negligent because they are using the item improperly.

This is a terrible, terrible thing. I recently had a baby boy. I can't imagine losing a baby. The thought almost brings me to my knees. I would not wish to go on living if something like this happen to my son. I mean that from the bottom of my heart. So, religious beliefs aside, this is one of the most devastating things that can happen to a person. People aren't supposed to outlive their children. Period. Shame on all you compassionless idiots.
Lastly, I'm another person in favor of doing away with guest commenting. They are just pure nonsense and hopefully the folks who do have something to say (other than the usual racist and/or hateful stuff) then they'll sign up and use an actual email address.
