10am to 8pm (through October 5th) // 263 W 38th St
READING: We may prefer listening to, rather than reading about, jazz, but John Coltrane had a whole world of things going on that led up to his icon-status in the genre. Times critic Ben Ratliff has gone and written a biography called Coltrane: The Story of a Sound
which "analyzes how the saxophone player came to be regarded as the last major figure in the evolution of jazz, tracing both the evolution of his playing style and the critical reception to it." Hear him read from his new release tonight.
7pm // 192 Book [192 Tenth Ave] // Free
CRAFTS: Make fun tonight at this monthly fabric art party. Bring your own friends and the fabric, materials and machines will be provided. Make whatever you want! Since Halloween is just around the corner, you may want to get started on a handmade costume. More details here.
8pm to 2am // Boring Inc. Basement Studio [1054 Bergen St, Brooklyn]
THEATER: The Night of Nosferatu is a new adaptation of the silent F.W. Murnau film Nosferatu and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Eschewing camp, the actors conjure up an atmosphere of chilling dread with the use of their voices, shadows and a few props. Reviewer Martin Denton writes: “Someone asked me what the point could be of retelling a story we all know perhaps a little too well. My response is that to do so can be both challenging and fun, as is this production.” – John Del Signore
8pm // WorkShop Theater Company [312 West 36th St, 4th Floor] // Tickets cost $18.
PARTY: Bloc Party at Hiro Ballroom? Not quite. But Kele from Bloc Party will be working the decks tonight along with Kaspar Bjorke. They'll be replacing James Ford of Simian Mobile Disco who has broken his collar bone...yikes! Get there early for The Glass, who will be playing a live set. Open (beer) Bar from 10pm to 11pm and drink specials promised all night (which is good because this place has ridiculous drink prices).
10pm // Hiro Ballroom [371 W 16th St] // Free, RSVP here
