What's a Bigger Nightmare, Roaches or Gordon Ramsay?

2007_09_kitchennightmares.jpgSome readers have wondered why people are tuning into Gossip Girl on Wednesday nights at 9PM, not only because the CW repeats its shows later on. The other 9PM television draw is Kitchen Nightmares on Fox. The show is the American version of chef Gordon Ramsay's British show named Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares.

In the show, Ramsay goes to struggling restaurants and whips them back into shape, alternately browbeating, inspiring, turning his nose up in horror, and mucking through rotten food. And this is all within a week! Last week, in the show's second episode, Ramsay traveled to New York City and tried to revamp a confused Midtown eatery named Dillons that offered a menu of cuisines from around the world (even though the chef's background is Indian), a bizarre LED billboard above the awning, three managers and meat in vegetarian dishes. And there were some excellent moments where Ramsay found roaches and rat droppings in the basement. We weren't sure what was scarier, the rodents or Ramsay's wrath!

But the best part is when he took the kitchen staff to the sparkling kitchen of his sleek restaurant, Gordon Ramsay at the London as a lesson in good kitchen hygiene. Cut to a professional team of steam cleaners. Even though Ramsay helped streamline the menu to be more modern Indian and rename it Purnima, it didn't stop one of the managers from trying to sue him, claiming that Ramsay staged much of the restaurant's flaws like a broken chair and rotten food. (A judge dismissed the case, sent it to arbitration and allowed it to air.) Naturally, this was the manager (now fired) who was spied getting his hair stroked by a waitress while resting and chatting on the cellphone during a meal service. Really, it's great - if you missed it, the show is on YouTube in three parts (1, 2, 3).

Tonight Ramsay travels to The Mixing Post in Bellmore to give his tough kitchen love to some Long Islanders. And Kitchen Nightmares is accepting applications to be on the next season of the show.

That Dillon's episode gave me nightmares. I kept dreaming about putrid tomatoes and swarms of roaches in my food. Can't wait for the next installment.

the uk version was much better.

the uk version seemed more involved and much harsher. also there wasn't always a happy ending.

Gordon Ramsay bad man! A very very bad man!

Seriously, you got to check out the UK version of the show - it's way better and Ramsay looks more in control. BBC America are showing it in reruns every Thursday and I hear they've also got a new season of the F Word coming up. That's Ramsay - not promoting his NY restaurant -but making celebrities prove they can cook and 'getting women back into the kitchen' apparently. The UK version that BBC America have of all his shows are definitely more entertaining than the US ones.

I would never eat at a Ramsey restaurant after seeing how he abuses the people who work for him.

But don't get me wrong I love the show.

Tonight, in contrast to last week, seems tame. That Times Square place with the pimp and coke dealing manager was great. The food made me barf but man that was something else television wise.

Also, one complaint "cris-crossing america" does not mean only going to long island restaurants.

I love Gordon's TV personality. This is great TV because it shows the cluster-fuck that is running a restaurant. I love the part in tonights show when the Mixing Post Manager Mike was crying after his yelling outburst. Great stuff.

Kevin, if a chef's abrasive personality is going to determine where you eat, I imagine you won't be patronizing many restaurants.

Oh, and you probably shouldn't believe everything you see on television.

I posted a blog article about the first episode of the new season - the one that chronicled Peter's Restaurant. I quickly got harrassing emails from Peter, threatening to sue me.

I liked the UK version as well, it seemed like they paid more attention to the cooks and cooking rather a big baby or two manager (which there has been so far in each 3 episodes). I still love it though lol. Has anyone else seen the creepy eyes that have popped up in each episode???? Last night it looked more like a robot face. I took a video of it last night I'll put it up on youtube a little later today.

Those Lawnguyland accents last night were killing me!

It's called the Mixing BOWL, not Post

Gordon Ramsay and his shar-pei face makes great television viewing. I also agree the UK version was better, but it still kicks Gossip Girl's ass.

Help! My wife insists on watching Gossip Girls!

well of course the UK version is better, but they also have that AMAZING restaurant inspection reality show (can't remember the name).

I was never offended by surly chefs because of the ranghe of their responsibilities and long hours...however, managers like Mike on last night's episode were the main reason I stopped working in restaurants.
