Pencil This In

READING: Our interviewee from yesterday, Adrian Tomine, will be reading tonight at Book Court. The graphic novelist not only has his work in some of the more prestigious rags, he's also got a full length graphic novel, titled Shortcomings.

7pm // Book Court [163 Court St, Cobble Hill] // Free

At a very different reading in Manhattan, Chris Matthews will be promoting his new political memoir Life's a Campaign: What Politics Has Taught Me About Friendship, Rivalry, Reputation and Success. Remember when he dropped the F-bomb on Imus?

7:30pm // Barnes & Noble [1972 Broadway] // Free

THEATER: Erik Sanko, former Lounge Lizard, current Skeleton Key member, made a big splash last season with his entrancing marionette oddity The Fortune Teller. His current curiousity, Dear Mme., is about a writer who continually endeavors to rewrite his own life story. It pairs Sanko’s laboriously handmade creations with the avant-garde string arrangements of Kronos Quartet. The first part of the evening features a collaboration between Kronos Quartet, Finnish accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen and sampling artist Samuli Kosminen. The piece, entitled Uniko, is a U.S. premiere described as a “dreamlike” mix of "innovative samplings of instruments, surround sound, and atmospheric video projections." For three performances only as part of Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival. – John Del Signore

7:30pm // BAM Harvey Theater [651 Fulton Street] // Ticket prices vary.

200710kurtcobain.jpgMOVIE: There's a new documentary out about Kurt Cobain titled About A Son. This one is less-tabloidy than some films about the musician in the past, and focuses on the man himself. You'll get 96 minutes of Kurt's voice, telling his own story, as the screen shows "clever animation and a beautiful collage of Pacific Northwest landscapes and everyday Seattle people."

6, 8:10, 10:20pm // IFC Center [323 6th Ave] // $11

SCIENCE: Before things get heated up on the Top Chef finale tonight, head over to Union Hall for an explosive Magmarita cocktail and a discussion about Super-volcanoes and Killer Asteroids. Geologist and NASA researcher Michael Rampino will be on hand for what could very well be a terrifying lecture on Mass Extinctions. Isn't science fun?!

8pm // Union Hall [702 Union St, Park Slope] // Free

MUSIC: The Secret Machines are still doing time at the Annex as part of their four-week residency. Reviews thus far have been favorable of the newly scaled down band...and tickets are still on sale for tonight's show. Get 'em while they're hot.

8:30pm // The Annex [152 Orchard St] // $15
