Mayor Bloomberg returned from London convinced more than ever that NYC needs to emulate the British capital's "Ring of Steel" surveillance system, which places cameras throughout the city to observe and help identify people in real time. He said that the danger of terrorism necessitated a similar system in New York, where plans are underfoot to install thousands of cameras and license plate readers in downtown Manhattan. "In London, they have two or three cameras on every single subway car, they have two or three cameras on every single bus."
Bloomberg cited the 2005 London Underground bombing that killed 52 people when suicide bombers set off explosives on crowded trains as a reason for the surveillance. Authorities were able to identify the dead terrorists within hours of the attack. The Mayor said that New Yorkers need to get used to being watched all the time, and that they already practically are watched constantly by private surveillance cameras. "I do think that in this day and age, if you think that cameras aren't watching you, you are very naïve." He added that the first thing police often do in a crime investigation is to check such cameras' recordings.
According to the Daily News, the MTA has a contract with Lockheed Martin to install 2,000 cameras in the MTA's network. NYC Transit has already installed 1,600 cameras in 70 subway stations (almost 23 per station!), with funding allocated for another 70 stations to be outfitted.

I can certainly see the immense value in being able to identify DEAD terrorists AFTER an attack.
Orwell once again proves to be a soothsayer amongst the idiots.
Just another step towards a police state and fascist country, ooh goodie....
I was just going to say the same thing as [1] did. I'm grudgingly willing to accept something like this if it would actually be able to prevent an attack beforehand, but afterwards? Meh.
you have GOT to be kidding me. just because you and your family are used to being watched 24/7 bloomie, does NOT mean that we, the non-millionaire citizens of NYC, want or NEED IT.
The cameras are more akin to the black boxes on planes. Although they will not prevent a plane from crashing, the information captured is invaluable to the post-crash investigation.
Learning the identities of the London suicide bombers and details such as the type and size of their bags (even after the fact) was of great relevance to the investigation.
Knowing who did it and how it was done could potentially help in identifying others that pose a threat and assist in preventing attacks.
midtown, you fail at PREVENTING terrorist attacks. your assignment? re-read comments 1-3.
per usual, after the fact,
bring in the clean up crew, have lots of donuts and coffee on hand.
FRIENDLY BLUE EYES
Rather than a Ring of Steel,
How about the human touch?
Cop on every single corner.
That's not asking very much.
zodak, you fail at reading comprehension (or perhaps you have ADD). Re-read my post, this time...all...the...way...to...the...end.
i cant wait until bloomberg's term is over. good riddance.
CCTV Cameras Fail to Cut British Crime...
But it's great at ID'ing dead terrorists!
"Knowing who did it and how it was done could potentially help in identifying others that pose a threat and assist in preventing attacks. "
Is there any evidence of this, or are we just going to give away more privacy for speculation?
Have widespread public surveillance cameras EVER been effective in ppreventing terrorism or crime. The only info I've ever seen suggests that cameras have zero value in preventing terrorism and have only served to move crime to new locations, not to lower it.

midtown, "could potentially" & "assist in preventing" is a definite argument for the effectiveness of those cameras. you win.
thanks, i feel so much safer now that those cameras will stop terrorist attacks.
wait, my reading comprehension skills were failing me, those were disclaimers about the effectiveness of those cameras all...the...way...at...the...end of your post. in other words they won't prevent anything because the london cameras were up before the bus bombings.
thanks, i could potentially feel so much safer now that those cameras might not assist in preventing terrorist attacks.
Hm, submit to a surveillance society out of fear of terrorists. Yeay, another right abandoned in the name of security. Why not chips implanted in all of us? That would certainly make identification easier.
Speaking for myself, I'd be willing to endure a slightly greater risk that terrorists wouldn't be identified after blowing themselves up, if it meant not having my every move recorded for anyone in the federal government to peruse.
We already live in a surveillance society.
But we don't have to make it worse.
They can't get the speakers to work in the subways, now they want video also?
Good luck.
I agree with guest 16, regarding the subway.
And furthermore,
They present these ideas and expect us to visualize it operating like a Hollywood movie. Give me a break. They don't have the first idea of how to use the information they will potentially gather, even AFTER an attack event. Expect TOTAL incompetance.
Ring of Steel... What a joke. Politician hot air.
