Secretary Rice Tells Students, "I'm Very Lucky"

2007_09_condirice2.jpg

Yesterday morning, Secretary of State Condolezza Rice visited Community School 154 in Harlem. Accompanied by Representative Charles Rangel, Rice, former Provost at Stanford, encouraged the students to dream big, “One thing that I want you to promise me is that you won't let anybody else tell you what it is you ought to be interested in. You'll find what you are interested in and you'll pursue it and you won't let anyone say 'Why would you want to be interested in that? You’re from Harlem.'"

The Daily News had some cute comments from students of the school, also known as the Harriet Tubman School, which has improved over the years:

"She blew me a kiss! And when she shook my hand, I felt special," crowed Illyanna Valentin, 9.

"She's a smart girl and she's working for the President," Illyanna explained. "She's pretty cool."

"She's very rich and she speaks Russian and she plays piano!" chimed in her pal Melissa Sealer, 8....

...Third-grader Jamel Dingle, 8, got the message loud and clear.

"She was a pretty lady," he said. "If she teaches in college maybe I'll go there. I might be President one day."

The young students also read her essays about why she inspired them and how they admired her. That was probably the highlight of her day, as fielding questions about her favorite book as a child (The Lives of Great Composers) and whether she would run for President (no) was probably a lot easier than dealing with the NY Post's editorial board. The board questioned her about many issues, including Blackwater - here's the State Department transcript of the meeting.

Rice also told NY1's Dominic Carter that if Rudy Giuliani asked her to be on his ticket, she would say no: "I'm headed back to Stanford, I'm headed back to a wonderful life in California where eventually, I can end up back in the classroom in front of some of the best and brightest students from all over America."

Condi looks pretty cute there, but then again I have that ebony milf thing going on.

i love feel-good stories like this. is this the 1st time she's done this? she should be visiting black schools more often. oh & #1 is right, condi's cute. i'd hit it!

she should have said "I'm very lucky to be the token woman and black lackey in the bush administration. My Race and Gender camouflage the fact that the bush administration has found no weapons of mass destruction. If I were White and a man I'd probably take so much more criticism but my skin color and gender deflate the blows and distract from the real truth. I hope all you kids get this opportunity I did Just like Isiah Thomas"

Calling Condi a token anything is insulting. There may not be many African Americans in the Bush Administration but she has worked with Bush and his father for almost two decades. The current President didn't appoint her to any of her positions based on gender or skin color. Whether she is qualified for the job is another matter altogether and if you wish to debate it go ahead. But it sounds like you're just being an asshole because you don't like Bush which again, you're entitled to. I certainly don't care for him.

If anyone was guilty of choosing people based on race or gender it was Bill Clinton. His entire Cabinet "that looks like America" was flawed on two fronts. While most of the people he picked were highly qualified they were not chosen because they were the "best" person for the job. They were picked to appease the liberal wing of the party to whom race is so important. Second, his Cabinet looked like America if everyone in America was wealthy and went to an Ivy League school.

I'm not going to defend her political views, but she's not stupid in any stretch of the imagination. Even as a staunch Democrat (and child free woman to boot), I found Boxer's "childless" comment to be a low blow.

#3 - What would you have said to those kids in Harlem? "Hey kids, you should aspire to be anything you want in life, just don't ever try to be Secretary of State in a Republican administration because your black and I don't share the same foreign policy and I don't believe that you can have your own independent thoughts other than the ones I ascribe to you based on your skin color."

yeah, she could of said that and I'm amazed at the comments here. You guys love black people, you really do.
not you jen, you're cool, matronly and down to earth.

Well, it's too bad she's still secretly in love with George W - and that certainly doesn't help the African-American gene pool...

A black closeted lesbian who aids the most homo-baiting and murderous white male junta to ever disgrace our nation. A low form of life.

The racist troll emerges. . . .

She went to a white school. She has white neighbors. She uses Crest Whitening Strips. Some say she's like a Ho-Ho Snack.

Gothamist's resident liberals don't come out to decry the racist posts on this thread. What a shocker.

"Albert Sharpton", are you pissed at her because she's a Republican? Because she's educated? Because she's not wearing a bikini and waiting for some unevolved douchebag gangsta rapper to run a tip drill on her? She may be a Bush apologist and a mediocre Secretary of State, but questioning her "blackness" says more about your antiquated thinking than it does about her career path. Grow up.

I'm not a "resident liberal". But I will decry racist posts. The reason most people ignore you is because it transparently clear that you are THE one person who posts ALL the racist, anti-semitic crap in the comments. Its your little impotent game. Its just boring. I have been advised to ignore you. Maybe I will start to do that. But for the moment. You are busted. Idiot.

I'll forever decry Condi as a shill to the most corrupt and degenerate White House crew there ever was... but I'll give her props for this.
