Is Brooklyn Vegetarian Restaurant Week in the Weeds?

2007_09_vegehugs.jpgMeat-adverse gourmands take note: October isn’t just Family Sexuality Education Month, Healthier Babies Month and Dental Hygiene Month, it’s also National Vegetarian Awareness Month! Yesterday, in fact, was World Vegetarian Day, which came hot on the heels of September 28th’s Hug a Vegetarian Day. (Photos!) Feeling aware yet?

Brooklyn vegetarians still aching from the sting of Heath Ledger’s departure can try to fill the void at the first annual Brooklyn Vegetarian Restaurant Week, which seems like a savory idea in the making. According to this announcement on the borough president’s website, a group of Kings County veggie eateries will offer discounted prix-fixe menus from the 21st to the 27th. But upon closer inspection, the event still seems a tad undercooked: there are only three restaurants currently signed up to participate. Of those, one is Veggie Brothers an “on-line only” restaurant. Another, 4 Course Vegan, is a “communal dining” experience which, while appetizing, looks like it’s run out of the chef’s house.

We spoke to event organizer Melissa D. Haile this morning; she was at a loss to explain why more restaurants have yet to sign up and assured us that this week would see a big “final push” to enlist more participants. On the plus side, a raffle for the highly coveted Vita-Mix 5000 juicer is ON! (Retail value $349.) Tickets for that and other glamorous yet animal-friendly prizes can be bought at the third participating restaurant, Park Slope’s The V-Spot, which is where the (potentially) big kick-off event on the 18th goes down.

    Hi John!

Thanks for helping to put a little fire under under the grill, er, pot, er, whatever we vegetarians cook with!

Vegetarians the borough over will be happy to know that as of today, Red Bamboo, Jill's, Imhotep's, The V-Spot Cafe, and Elaa Juice Bar, have signed up to participate in Brooklyn Goes Veg!

And 4-Course Vegan is an excellent, intimate dining experience that's so worth going to someone's house for.

    We should have dinner!

    Love & Light,

    Melissa D. Haile

Well I may in the minority here but I like vegetarian restaurants, and Brooklyn. I can't recommend Kate's Joint Brooklyn, though - not as good as the one in Manhattan and frankly kinda dirty. Also they screwed up and re-charged all their customers who paid with credit cards a few months back.

Are forcing little kids to be vegetarian actually good for them? It would seem that meat would be useful for, I dunno, growing.

I want to see something like vegetarian veal scallopini or vegetarian suckling pig - just to see how far some vegetarians are willing to take it.
