PETA Targets New Yorkers

200709dogbag.jpgTime Out NY has a list of PETA's most wanted in the city. The organization has 25,000 of its 1.6 million members based right here, and while we wish they'd have a crack team of those members targeting folks like Brooklyn's Cruella DeVil, here are some of the big offenders.

• The Ringling Brothers circus is back in town in March 2008 and PETA is again questioning the way the circus treats its animals. The elephants parading through the Midtown Tunnel each year is especially disheartening and described as nothing more than a "PR stunt."

• NYU and Columbia both harbor a lot of scientific animal testing. TONY states that "Alka Chandna, Ph.D., a PETA senior researcher, even volunteers a couple of profs for particular censure: 'NYU's Lynne Kiorpes subjects infant and adult macaque monkeys to invasive procedures that impair the animals' vision,' she reports, 'and Columbia University's Raymond Stark studies the impact of morphine on the development of fetuses by pumping morphine into fetal baboons.'"

• The horse-drawn carriage companies are getting a lot of attention recently. The Coalition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages is backed by PETA and has been pressuring Mayor Bloomberg for nearly two years to get rid of the mostly tourist-funded horse-torture vehicles.

Who else is on the list? The cosmetics industry, Musicon venison farm, Parsons The New School for Design (sort of), and most likely you. Yes, you. The list finishes off with all New York dog owners and all New York meat eaters! Maybe their new racy GoVeg ad with Alicia Silverstone (or the E. Coli found in beef around town) will help convert the latter.

PETA criticizing another organization for PR stunts?? "LOL"

Yes, you. The list finishes off with all New York dog owners and all New York meat eaters!

oh enough already.

steak is delicious.

How can PETA possibly speak in defense of animal rights when they've been convicted of killing over 14,000 dogs and cats?

Peta Kills Animals

My question for PETA is "What happens if you win." What happens if we stop using animals for any purpose. Do we set the cows free or keep them from breeding until they slowly die off to a more manageable cow population. Wild pigs roaming the suburbs? Chickens everywhere? And the dogs, an animal bred for domestication, will there be wild gangs of poodles wandering through New York yelping at locals who are unable to fight back less they harm an animal? Will we free the domestic cat, an animal that has lived pretty comfortably in the lap of luxury since ancient Egypt, devour all our native birds. I'm all for ending animal cruelty, but I don't think PETA knows what the hell it is actually trying to accomplish.

Agreed 100%, Nick S. But it must be "okay" when they do it.

I can't stand PETA either. They're really the first word in first world entitlement. I eat meat not only because I dearly love it, but because I know how much it pisses them off.

oh Peta can go fuck themselves. My dogs eat better than most children in my neighborhood, and they are pampered beyond belief as well, sleeping in the sun on sheepskins {haha, had lamb for dinner last night too} all day. So what's their issue with dog owners?

then, you're an asshole in the first world degree.

PETA Supporters need to have their brains scanned.

As for E-Coli: as I remember it, the last few years there have been more vegetable–organic scares than meat: carrots, cukes, spinach, lettuce, romain, cabbage, etc etc...

MEAT IS TASTY

some small part of me hopes for heavily distressing times that force a struggle for survival. It would really clean out the shallow end of the gene-pool.

"As for E-Coli: as I remember it, the last few years there have been more vegetable–organic scares than meat: carrots, cukes, spinach, lettuce, romain, cabbage, etc etc..."

yeah, and that has nothing to do with industrial meat. Idiot. How do you think those vegetables got E-Coli?

I work with Raymond Stark. His research has to potential to save many lives. PETA, Gothamist, New York Mag and this Alka Chandna character ought to think about who they slander.

#8 says:

& then has the audacity to ask:
So what's their issue with dog owners?

I wouldn't mind seeing an end to little dogs being carried around in purses. I always secretly hope they are going to the bathroom all over inside.

Plus, why are people spending so much money on those inbred things when you can get perfectly lovely dogs for free? They don't have their papers but they're still good too. (Then again I bet inbreeding is how mr. winkle happened and he's amazing http://www.mrwinkle.com)

I think there is something weird about NY dog owners, I wouldn't say it's cruelty, maybe its just more like...ridiculousness...

In response to the person who works in Raymond Stark's laboratory: Stark has been pumping pregnant monkeys full of nicotine and morphine and then cutting into the fetuses while still in utero for the past 25 years. We already know that nicotine and morphine impair the proper development of the fetus. Taxpayers have unwittingly funded Stark's cruel and pointless experiments to the tune of millions and millions of dollars, but that money would have been better used (and actually saved people) if directed toward smoking cessation programs and programs that help women kick drug habits that endanger their own lives and the lives of their babies. People can read more at www.columbiacruelty.com

I fought a hipster PETA vegan once and his punches felt like bubbles bursting against my body. So I clocked him with one punch and stuff a hamburger patty down his throat. PETA is worst than NAMBLA in my opinion.

Thanks #16 - I was mystified about how injecting morphine into fetal baboons to study how it affects their fetal development could possibly benefit mankind.

The research seemed a bit convoluted. Sounds like it is one of those research situations where the data is interesting to know but not really relevant.

A classic case of research for research's sake?

What about all the gay guys and the gerbils they stuff up each others ass?

I don't know why they focus so much on the circus and horse-drawn carriages when there billions of animals a year being mutilated on factory farms. See this site for more:

#21 - I love meat and I pretty much don't care how they are processed. Big steak dinner again tonight.

What about all the gay guys and the gerbils they stuff up each others ass?

Hey, I've got three of 'em up my ass right now, and they're still living in better conditions than a LES hipster in a shared-bathroom studio!

For every animal PETA supporters don't eat, I'll rape three of their sexiest members.

At least they'll still be saving the animals. I'm having tofu and infidel women tonight, baby!

Death to Israel btw
