Last Night's Action: One More Day

Mets 13, Marlins 0: For once, optimism abounds. John Maine struck out 14 and took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning -- he lost it on a bleeder up the third-base line -- to guide the Mets back into a tie for first place. For once, the Mets roughed up a pitcher they needed to rough up. If they hadn't gotten to Chris Seddon, they probably didn't deserve to make the playoffs. Even though Maine didn't have to throw the game of his life given the run support received, the righty should still get heaps of praise. After the game, the Mets could sit back and watch Washington take down Philadelphia to leave everything even with one game to go. Sunday brings Tom Glavine against Florida's Dontrelle Willis and Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer against Washington's Jason Bergmann. A one-game playoff would be in Philadelphia on Monday night if both teams win and lose. San Diego lost and Colorado won Saturday, leaving the Padres just a game up in the wild card and leaving open a host of other possibilities.

Yankees 11, Orioles 10: Talk about ugly wins. Andy Pettitte looked at his worst but still got a victory after his teammates exploded for a 10-run fourth. Some of those hitters might not be his teammates in October as Joe Torre played plenty of reserves. This game means nothing, and if Pettitte's not going to lose sleep over the poor start, then no one should. He was probably saving himself.

Red Bulls 2, Real Salt Lake 2: Juan Pablo Angel scored the equalizer 10 minutes before full-time to give the Red Bulls a share of the points. His 17th goal of the season set a franchise record.
