Last Night's Action: The Nightmare Continues

2006_04_smetslogo.jpg

  • Marlins 7, Mets 4: Who thought this bad dream would last this long? Needing a quality start from Oliver Perez to stop their bleeding, the Mets instead got a vintage -- as in 2005 -- effort in their fifth straight loss. Not even Byung-Hyun Kim could play the platelet to the Mets' open wound. The Marlins righty kept the Mets in check, and Oliver Perez lost control at the most critical points. Even David Wright, for so long a legitimate MVP candidate, made a critical misplay. With no out and the bases loaded, he fielded a one-hop grounder and threw home for the force. When the return throw came from catcher Paul Lo Duca, Wright inexplicably didn't step on the base and instead looked to tag the runner. Now, the Mets are inexplicably looking up at a playoff spot. Philadelphia's win put it one game up in the division with two games remaining. Remember when the Mets were trying to plan out their postseason rotation? Soon they might be able to work on their rotation for April.

  • Orioles 10, Yankees 9 (10 innings): So ended the Yankees run of division titles. Mariano Rivera blew a save after Mike Mussina returned to his unimpressive self, and the Yankees proceeded to lose in 10 innings. They'll draw Cleveland in the first round of the playoffs, and Joe Torre will have to think about if he wants Mussina or Phil Hughes starting in the postseason.

oops...oh yeah..the Red Sox won the division

The Yankees will not succeed because of the money they spend on their players. They will succeed because of their home grown young talent. The Yankees aren't the only team that can spend money on players. The Red Sox and Mets have money too. They are second and third in revenue the league. And regarding the Mets collapse, I would blame Omar Minaya.

  • ummm, last guest, yoo-hoo. Sox clinched AL East last night on the O's predictable squeeze play.

The Yankees will win the division and the world series this year like they should every year...! They paid enough $$$$$$$$ for it..

No, the Yankees were the biggest choke in history. Nobody had ever blown a 3-0 post season lead. The Mets choke was what, 7 games over two weeks? The Red Sox choke of 1978 was more impressive.

In other news, some retarded Jets fans is suing the Patriots and Belichick for $184 million.

no. the yankees were the biggest collapse in baseball history, WERE until the mets. Thanks mets!

The Mets needed starting and relief pitchers for the last two months of the season. Why didn't they bring up some rookies to help? Is there a problem with the Mets farm system? It's not Willie's fault. It's the GM.

  • LOL at these Mets comments.

Willie Randolph is not arguably the best manager in MLB. He's an average skipper at best. He's not even the best manager among ex-Yankees. He's also not close to Torre as manager.

    Paying top-dollar for pitching? P-E-D-R-O.

The Mets collapse is total now. But, it's not the biggest collapse in baseball history. Did New Yorkers forget the unprecedented choke by the Yankees in 2004? HAHAHAHAHAHA!

    S! O! X! Sox! Sox! Sox!

What I dread is the Willie-bashing. Randolph didn't cheap out on pitchers, and he is, though arguably, the best manager in baseball. Professional, passionate, and a true leader, making pennies on the Torre dollar. The Mets have to spend top dollar for pitching and get rid of some dead weight, period.

    Let's go, Mets!

inexplicably caring about the mets, inexplicably.
