A police officer has filed a lawsuit against the police department, accusing the NYPD of discrimination and harassment because he is openly gay. Five-year veteran Michael Harrington said that his career had stalled after coming out to a coworker in 2003. He listed a number of grievances in his court papers:
- He was repeatedly called "faggot" at the 75th Precinct in Brooklyn and received a note that said "Die, you c---"
- During a domestic disturbance call, a co-workers "turned his back on a female beating victim to call him 'a f---ing faggot.'" (Post)
- When he brought his domestic partner to a precinct Christmas party, another officer spat out his drink and laughed; Harrington and his partner were also snubbed.
- An fellow officer yelled, "Don’t do anything to him in the bathroom. We know he’s your type," when Harrington escorted a suspect to the bathroom to wash pepper spray off his face (Daily News)
- He was denied the opportunity to work day shifts so he and his partner could adopt a baby (other heterosexual officers were allowed transfers)
- A Patrolemn's Benevolent Association union rep tore up a death threat Harrington received
- Another cop told him to carry a shoplifting suspect's purse "because it suited him"
- He was told he was being transferred to a West Village precinct to "be with his people"
- A fellow police officer told him, "All faggots should be shot."
The NYPD said they hadn't seen the lawsuit yet but they take "all allegations of discrimination seriously and in no way condones retaliation."

I'm not sure the NYPD's response is code for anything. It seems more indicative that they assume more problems will arise, which is kind of case in point for Harrington.

I am sure that as a "rookie" all officers get the jobs that no one else wants. Isn't that the job description of all new guys/gals - you get to do the jobs no one else wants.
I see that there are fraternal organizations within the NYPD, one is specifically for gay officers GOAL. I would think that the officer would have enlisted their assistance with learning the ropes of the job and learning how to network within the system.
I think the first thing that popped out was that he has had the same problem in all his assignments.
Seems to me that there are numerous officers in the NYPD who have alternate life styles and have suceeded. Maybe it's this person inability to do what needs to be done as a police officer.

How long is the probationary period for cops these days? 2 years, 3 years?
If you actually read the NY Times article you can see the timeline:
July 2002 -joins NYPD
February 2003 - shares his orientation.
Sometime in 2003 asks for specific tours with approximately one year on.****
September 2004 - Day off denied.****
December 2004 - files his suit, with one & half years on, and the same year has a tough time at the Christmas Party.
October 2005 - transferred to 6th Precinct
Now assigned to Manhattan South Task Force.
****I can't judge his work but to ask for a specific tour before you are off probation is a bit much. Same for having one day off denied.
As far as his career - he seems to have made some leaps from a gritty Brooklyn precinct to a nice Manhattan precinct and then to the elite Manhattan Task Force in a pretty short time.
I know some guys and gals in the department that have family and children, some single parents and and they still work the hours they are assigned. They miss family functions and holidays because they have days off denied.

The Department didn't hire btw 1980 and 1984-the retirement rate went thru the roof after 9/11 and has continued so-with something like 2000 retirements in 2004 alone more in 2000. Based upon 2000 person classes since 2000 that's about 16k employees. More than half of the uniformed members of the service-which is down to about 33 thousand-from 40 thousand in 2000.
