A huge crowd fathering in Washington Square Park last night to hear Senator Barack Obama speak. He mentioned that he "used to hang out in Washington Square Park" and that he knew "a little something about Greenwich Village." His speech touched upon issues like making college more affordable and how his relative lack of experience didn't matter, "Longevity does not guarantee good judgment. A long resume says nothing about your character.”
And there was love: When one supporter yelled love for Obama, the senator from Illinois said, "I love you back." An NYU freshman told the Washington Square News, "Barack Obama is the most gangster politician to ever come to Washington" and that "Hell yeah!" he would vote for him, while a 72-year-old registered Republican told the Columbia Spectator that she would be voting Democrat no matter what, "We’re in a very, very serious time now with our safety and our freedoms."
Many reports say that the crowd was around 25,000 people, but the NY Times said that the the number was "impossible to verify" but that the "audience was one of the largest [for Obama] of the year." (The Post reports the crowd was around 15,000.)

Senator Hillary Clinton, the Democratic front-runner, is expected to win the NY State Democratic primary, but the Times also explains that Obama could pick up part some NY State delegates since Democrats "split their delegates proportionally." An adviser said, "We heart New York. Delegates are proportioned by congressional district – not winner take all. We firmly believe we can come out of New York with a sizeable delegate piece for Barack.” And NYC is where a lot of money is. The third quarter of campaign financing ends on Sunday.

Run, Al, Run
I don't particularly care for any of the candidates running for either party ...
"A huge crowd fathering in Washington Square Park last night to hear Senator Barack Obama speak."
WINNER: 2007 Gothamist mis-type of the year.
It reminds me of the one South Park episode where all the men form a giant gay-sex pile to make all the visitors from the future disappear.
That's some crowd. Too bad probably only three of those people are registered to vote and, statistically, only one of them will pull the lever.
he ain't going to be president, it's just not going to happen, go home young 'uns, go home and commit your nyu suicides
I don't know why any of the Democrats are bothering to run since the party leaders are doing everything to guarantee Hillary Clinton wins the nomination.
I think if the democrats were truly smart, Obama and Hilary would join up. Hilary as president, Obama as VP. Then after Hilary's term, Barrack would gain the "experience" needed to become president. Just a thought.
Ron Paul 2008.
poster 6...that is a great thought. i hope obama gets in the there somehow.
An NYU freshman told the Washington Square News, "Barack Obama is the most gangster politician to ever come to Washington" and that "Hell yeah!" he would vote for him
Eyes... rolling... stomach... turning.
hillary sould make a horrible president
i'd vote for the GOP candiate over her, at least their honest about being assholes
I attended the rally last night and was very impressed. He was a compelling and inspiring speaker and managed to move beyond rhetoric to discuss some very specific actions that he would take as president. There is an honest, "straight-shooter" quality to Obama that you rarely see in politics on either side of the aisle. Kerry certainly lacked it. I like Hillary too, but lacks it as well... too smooth, old-school politics.
Anyone who thinks Obama can get elected President has never traveled west of the Westside Highway or south of the Beltway.
Hillary has a better shot. But so many people find her repulsive that it will be anyone but her.
#11 i was there too and heard lots of happy hope talk, but NO specifics. what are the specifics that you heard?
anyone-but-giuliani '08
#13, some specifics that he mentioned were:
-Close Guantanamo
-Require cars to go 40 miles per gallon
-US out of Iraq ASAP
-Engage in talks with Syria/Iran and other hostile nations (and provided a strong reason why he believes this is appropriate)
The calls to fix education, provide universal health care and social security were more general.
Can we call the Typo of the Year award the "Jen Chung"?
#9 - should be "gangsta" politician, not gangster (although there seem to be plenty of the latter).
#14: "US out of Iraq ASAP"
the night before he said he could not commit to that before even 2013.
pelosi said that in 2004 too, and has been entirely inefective.
i hate the democrats, but hate giuliani much more. he would be MUCH worse than Four More Years.
obama is more palatable than many of the others, but is probably not electable.
gore--PLEASE RUN!!!!
lol@#4
Of all the people in that picture, maybe five of them will actually go vote.
GO BARACK!!!!!!!!!
Cynical comment....cynical comment....mmmmm....i'm smarter than all of you...mmmm...cynical comment....nothing will work...mmmm...i hate everyone....mmmm.
It seems a little silly to speak about making college more affordable at a private school attended largely by affluent kids.
That discussion would be a lot more appropriate at a state school or CUNY, etc.
