It took the Mets a little more than two weeks, but they've somehow managed to squander a seven-game lead in the National League East. Since September 12th, the lead has slowly gotten smaller and is now zero, zilch, zip, nadda, nil. With three games left in the regular season, the Mets are tied with the Phillies for first in the NL East. The last time the Mets weren't in sole possession of first place - May 15th! How did they get to where they are now? Starting on Sept. 14th, the Mets went 4-10, including a 5-game losing streak and a 4-game losing streak. It didn't help that the Phillies went on a tear during the same stretch of games, including a three-game sweep of the Mets.
While the Mets are tied for the NL East lead, they are in a 3-way tie with the Rockies and the Phillies for 2nd in the chase for the NL Wild Card. The Padres currently lead the Wild Card standings.
Although it may be too early to talk about the Mets and their tiebreaker situations (after all, they can't seem to win at all), here they are anyway:
-If the Mets and Phillies finish tied atop the East: A one-game playoff will be played Monday at Philly's Citizens Bank Park. But to get to any of those situations, it seems like the Mets would have to win first.
-If the Mets and the Diamondbacks finish in a tie for the Wild Card: A one-game playoff will be played at Shea Stadium.
-If the Mets and the Rockies finish in a tie for the Wild Card: A one-game playoff will be played at Coors Field.
-If the Mets and the Padres finish in a tie for the Wild Card: A one-game playoff will be played at Shea Stadium.
In an attempt to save their season, the Mets take on the Marlins for three games, starting tonight. If it's of any comfort for Mets fans, it should be noted that the team took 3 of 4 from the Marlins just last weekend. The Phillies face the Nationals at home for their final three games of the regular season, a team they just won 3 of 4 from as well.

It's amazing that with only 3 games to go, no one in the NL has clinched a playoff spot. It's pretty cool actually, even though it's been tough watching the Mets crumble.
I guess the Mets do need to spend an additional $77,313,226 to make the playoff like the Yankees do every year.
Yankees opening day payroll $195,229,045
Mets opening day payroll $117,915,819
Go Rockies!!!
While I hate the Yankees #2, I give them credit this year, because it was their prospects and other young players that saved their season.
not to mention playing tampa bay 19 times a year
Has there ever been a more fun time to be a Yankees fan in New York? Payroll, the Devil Rays, your barbs can't hurt fellas, your team can't even win a division in the National League where it seems every team is playing to not make the playoffs! Oh and did you see your rotation this week, see you in 2008!
1) mets fans are losers
2) its always funny when someone bitches about the yanks payroll. the knicks have the highest payroll in the league and they suck.
hey #4, did you ever see the signing bonuses the yankees give to young talent to join their minor league system. they not only buy major league stars but they buy up all of the young prospects as well. baseball sucks!!!!
People who dis others while posting as "guests" are the real losers, which includes #7. Man up and register.
Payroll though doesn't guarantee championships, and less expensive teams have been winning it all for the last 6 years. That's why teams like KC and Pirates continue to play even though their chances are slim to none, and their owners have not pushed for a salary cap. I do give credit to the Yanks for coming back from being written off months ago.
While the Yankees spend about 70 million more, the Mets still have the highest payroll in the NL. And they also get to play teams who don't have much of a payroll at all.
I'm a Met fan, but I think their payroll is ridiculous too. Baseball needs a salary cap, or the game is going to be ruined more than it already has.
Also, winning with a big payroll takes some of the fun out of winning. It's just not genuine.
Has there ever been a more fun time to be a Yankees fan in New York?
1996 when the team was likeable and hadn't won anything in 15 years?

People who constantly whine about "guests" vs. "registereds" are real losers. Start your own site with mandatory registration or just go away.

They continue to play because when the leagues thought about buying out a team and shutting it down back in the 1990s the Players Union threatened a lawsuit. Plus, there's always the possibility of selling your franchise to an even deeper pocketed owner who can try to squeeze more money out of the assets by raising prices and bilking municipalities out of tax money. Cash flow means very little in pro sports. It's all about owning a team for ego purposes and later cashing out.
#11 - If you had read my comment more carefully I was only calling out people who insult others while hiding and posting as "guests", I had no problem with people posting as guests in general. And I agree that I actually liked the 96 Yanks when they were a scruffy team who beat the big bad favorite Braves.
I'm a Mets fan and love making fun of the Yanks when it's appropriate, but the fact that the Yankees spend lots of money has zero bearing on the fact that the Mets have choked away a big lead.
Yeah, "man up" and register with some fabulous nickname like "Dude69." Then everyone will know that you stand behind what you say.
You gotta believe! I believe. I believe that the Mets suck. I believe that any talk about the Yankees payroll is meant to distract people from the fact that the Mets play in the National League, where they suck. I believe that the Mets won't make the playoffs this year. I believe that the Yankees will win the World Series again before the Mets, who are now waiting 21 years.
as a yankees fan we always do 3 things as the year winds down. 1.root for the yankees to make the playoffs. 2. root for the bosox not to make the playoffs and 3. after the yankees and bosox playoff drama is over we check to see the struggling mets try to make the playoffs and are entertained by their hijinks. LOL! Mets fans are the best. Even when the mets were doing good the Yankees were always on the backpages and now that they are freefalling they finally get that coveted backpage. LOL!!!!!! the mets are funny. Yankees fans hate bosox fans but treat mets fans like their little brothers who try to beat them, we are just annoyed at you.
Why does baseball have this one game playoff thing to break ties, instead of breaking the tie using the winner of the head to head season series like other leagues do?
the game doesn't need a salary cap. Who won the last 5 years? angels, detroit, and marlins. that's some shitty payrolll right there.
a payroll doesn't guarantee anything but the fact that you'll more likely than not be a contender and that's lame. i mean come on, you dont need to be a genius to wonder why the yankees have gone to the playoffs 13 years in row. imagine salary caps and rev sharing in baseball like they have in the nfl? baseball would be a comepletely different game and way more intersting than it is now. but most sports fans are status quo idiots who just take whatever is given to them without question. i can't understand how a yankee fan can get emotional over making the playoffs again when they pretty much buy their way into the playoffs every season. it's so false, so weak.
The Mets just fucking suck. Suck suck suck.
when you're in a big market, with expensive seats, a loyal fanbase, and your own tv channel, your arguments against the yankees payroll are baseless. steinbrenner is far from the richest owner. he's simply the one who wants to win the most by spending as much as he likes. and yankee fans benefit. george puts the best product he can on the field, and that puts asses in seats, and as a result he's got the richest franchise in baseball. its just good business.
and he's got great baseball minds working for him. money only gets you so far, as the knicks can attest.
i dont know how much more wilpon should've spent on his team to prevent this agony. but if another 20-30 mil could've pushed you to the playoffs and let your fans be satisfied, then WHY THE FUCK NOT? how much value does being a perennial playoff contender add to your team?
neener neener Mets fans!
george steinbrenner vs. James dolan. James dolan has more money but the guy is a fucking tool
