Williamsburg Condo Market Going up in Flames

No, seriously-- check this photo I'm Not Saying just sent in:

2007_9_condofire.jpg

This is the Northside Piers project at Kent and 5th. DEVELOPING.

Update: BNN reports-- "164 KENT AVE & NORTH 5TH ST| ALL FIRE HAS BEEN XTGH'ED, PRIMARY SEARCH ON THE TOP FLOOR(S) IS (-)" That's good news-- especially if you bought an apartment in the building!

Update: Mihow has another angle-- check out that billowing smoke!

Update: I'm Not Saying has put up a few more angles-- who wants to help us pen quick film treatment for "Towering Inferno 2: Hipsters on Fire"?

Update: we called up Halstead Property, which is representing the project. Robyn, their communications rep, told us there were no injuries from the fire, and that everyone was quickly evacuated, and that all the workers are now back on site. Apparently the fire was started by a kettle that was being used to prepare roofing tar-- which explains why, although the fire was immediately contained, there was so much smoke.

That is unfortunate now, innit.

sweet sweet irony. hope nobody's hurt though.

Before any of this hit the blogosphere, my co-worker showed me a picture that his friend had e-mailed him as the fire was happening. We looked out the office window and there was the toxic smoke. Totally meta.

please explain the irony in this.

funny, maybe. but ironic? methinks you might need to check a dictionary.

by the way... i like how hipster and gentrification jokes come before comfirming if anyone was injured.

I completely agree, Nick.

Is this the one that is radically chic and chicly radical?

Pretty sure very few hipsters will be living here, fire or not.

I think it was radically on fire. Can't comment on the Chic part.

Melted skin is the new trucker hat.

... . .

Ok that was mean..

that thing is ugly, karma rises again.

WHO CARES is someone is a "hipster" or not, you shouldn't be making fun of people who may be hurt you A**H*&LES.

irony-
the paradoxical nature of reality or the contrast between an ideal and actual condition, set of circumstances, etc., frequently in such a way as to stress the absurdity present in the contradiction.

irony can and does exist in the world outside of plays, socratic dialogues, and thrift store t-shirts.

I think its an ugly building and a blemish to the skyline (Nothing really to do with gentrification or 'hipsters'). The photo of this luxury condo building, intended as a chic waterfront property, on fire and failing to serve it's 'majestic' intention, is ironic to me. But maybe thats just me...

good god, sorry to upset you with my choice of words, #5. im surprised i even took the time to explain myself, but it was just too irritating.

Please ban #12. Thanks.

It's ironic in the Alanis Morissette way.

#12: "LEAVE THEM ALOOONEEE! THEY'RE HUUUUMANS!!!"

Hipsters don't have $500K to buy a condo. C'mon, Gothamist, you're better than that.

#17, No, but hipsters' parents do.

I like how people claim to know the bank accounts of other peoples parents.

Start picking on people who deserve to be picked on - like yuppies. After all, it's their fault that these over-priced apartments are popping up everywhere.

Are you people over hipster jokes already? Seriously, it's such a bore.

Dobkin started all this with his "Hipsters on Fire" post. Frankly I don't give a shit if hipsters are on fire.

I like how people claim to know the bank accounts of other peoples parents.

Because the New York Times ran an article on people helping their kids buy apartments in the city and Williamsburg was a popular choice? Or maybe because I don't know too many people under 30 that didn't get help in buying their first apartment? STFU.

[19], a hipster is just a yuppie in a t-shirt. Status obsessed, lots of material possessions, etc...

A hipster is not the same as a yuppie wearing a hipster mask. The kids with parents to fund a condo never were hipsters, and will never be. Just a child of yuppie.

don't let that thrift store corduroy sports jacket fool you, most of these people (hipsters) have money.
newsflash, most of the students in expensive liberal arts colleges have money, then then go work for daddy and get a job with daddy's help.
this is not your average TCI student.

Maybe they should be called Yupsters.

you're right.. how dare someone try to sully the good name of "the hipster."

i used to want to throw bricks through their office windows on bedford. and when i saw the billowing smoke from n6 and bedford, i jumped for joy. hope that shit burns the fuck down.
