Swastikas Found in Brooklyn Heights

2007_09_swas.jpgLast night, two synagogues, three buildings, and a two cars in Brooklyn Heights were found with swastikas painted on them. The NYPD is investigating the incidents as bias crimes, and this comes after last Friday's discovery of swastikas and other graffiti on a Williamsburg yeshiva's bus.

The Brooklyn Heights Synagogue and Chabad, both on Remsen Street, had swastikas on their staircases, while the apartment building at 45 Columbia Place had a four-foot swastika with "Kill Jews" written under it. Two other buildings on Columbia Place were also defaced, as were some cars. The police, who have been investigating since last night, have not made any arrests yet.

A real estate agent who lives in one of the Columbia Place building told WABC 7, "It's irrational and it's sad, but I don't think it has anything to do with me. I'm Irish. I've lived here all my life and I've never seen anything like this."

it's so obviously the jews themselves trying to garner sympathy. Their tactics are pretty lowball. I bet this is response to that iran guy being here.

Even if that last comment was sarcasm it's pretty disgusting and sad.

As for the Irish Real Estate agent's comment, well, you do live in the community, so, yeah, I could see how it has _nothing_ to do with you. Great attitude! *chokes on own sarcasm*

What's the crime here...?

user-pic

duh and double duh....the whole spiel of ones vs the others is soooooooo old...when are we going to see beyond this moronic rule of hate and taking stupid sides? Idiots will be idiots, no matter wich side you are. Keep paying attention to dull manifestations of hate and fear...that is fruitful!

i find it interesting that here you said " Two other buildings on Columbia Place were also defaced".

you are constantly hyping "street art" on this site, and in that context you never acknowledge that it is defacing property.

but in both cases it is graffiti.

So far this winning the coveted "most idiotic Gothamist message board posts of the week." Congrats trolls, you are all seeing who can be the most shocking. And you know what... it's boring. You are all the equivalent of whoopie cushions, making some noise through some unoriginal joke and hope that everyone pays attention to how cute you are.

user-pic

I bet banksy did this in the name of provacative "street art"

where's jake dobkin when we really need him?

user-pic

this happens every year at this time, why does it still shock people? People are people especially in NY, assholes, every one of them.
both sides has its trolls.

The crime here is people's property (homes, cars) got vandalized, and now they have to pay to get it fixed... not to mention the offensiveness of the scrawl. Come out one morning and find your car covered in spray paint and you might feel differently.

*sigh* Why do I bother?

user-pic

yeah, and my mail box got knocked over,
quick call the cops and the media.

user-pic

great street art! way to go guys! keep it up

Until these synagogues have watchmen or surveilence cameras some people will continue to wonder whether this sort of graffiti is self inflicted.

user-pic

Some people will wonder...
Yes, Nazis, fascists, and anti-Semites will wonder. The same people who deny the Holocaust ever happened. Over-reaction? I don't see a lot of crosses or crescents being spray-painted on other religions' buildings (thank God). The beauty of NYC is that people overall are tolerant of their differences; it takes repulsive actions like this to bring out those who love to hate.

The catholics have their baby jesus statues stolen every Christmas but they always seem to recover them. How are they able to do this while the jewish institutions never catch the ones who vandalise their buildings? Put a watch on your property every September jewish people! Catch these thugs in the act!
