Taking of Pelham One-Two-Three to be Remade With Denzel Washington

2007_09_takingof.jpgMove over, remake of The Warriors: Variety (subscription required) reports that Denzel Washington will star in the Tony Scott-directed remake:

Washington will take on the role of Zachary "Z" Garber, which was played by Walter Matthau in the original 1974 Joseph Sargent-helmed film. The story, based on a novel by John Godey, also spawned a 1998 TV movie starring Edward James Olmos.

The latest incarnation takes place in contemporary New York and is set in motion when four hijackers take over a subway train and hold the passengers for ransom.

Production will reportedly start in the first quarter of next year. And we have so many questions, such as: What will the ransom be in this version - one million seems a bit chintzy/Dr. Evil-y... perhaps $100 million? Will the action take place on one of the new R160 train lines? Or will it be on the 6 line, which does have the relatively newer trains anyway? And will there be an updated version of the line, "Screw the goddamn passengers! What the hell did they expect for their lousy 35 cents - to live forever? " ("What, for a $76 unlimited card [or whatever the new raised rate is], they wanna live forever?"

As it happens, Tony Scott is the director attached to the remake of The Warriors (set in LA!), but since no stars have been announced, we're going to bet that The Taking of Pelham One Two Three gets made sooner. And Washington will appear in another NYC-set drama this year: American Gangster, which comes out next month.

Why re-make great films?

I think a 100 mil is a bit too much for the lives of commuters. My suggestion is to take out the train with mustard gas and let God figure out who was the bad and the good guys.

user-pic

Are they going to recreate that cool police car rollover crash on Astor Place? You know, when the cops are rushing uptown with the ransom money from the federal reserve bank.

And will the bad guy sneeze at the end and give himself away? How can they possibly improve on that face that Walter Mattheau made when he heard the sneeze?

Variety has been subscription-free for some time.

NO WAY!

I loved this movie as a kid. It added more than the usual danger in my mind to taking the subway in the 70's.

Come up with something new Hollywood.

Actually Walter Mattheu's face could have used a lot of improvement. It was his co partner on "streets" that had it done unfortunately poorly.

Jen Chung - the letter of the day is "S!"

Christ, I just looked at Tony's imdb bio. He hasn't made a good feature in 12 years, since Crimson Tide.

The train should be filled with studio executives and directors that re-make movies. Of course, the movie would only last a few minutes, since no one would want to save the lives of these people. But, it would still be a lot of fun.

They could remake it, but move it to a tougher city. The real greatness in the original is the attitudes of people, from the passengers to the MTA employees to the cops. They have that 70s "F*$% me? No, F*$% you!" vibe going. The dialog is terrific.

That New York City simply doesn't exist any more. This town is way too soft. Manhattan is now the billionaire's playground. They should move it to Detroit or some other place.

was there not a remake of this movie just a few years ago featuring that guy who's a detective now on Law & Order Criminal Intent?

That one was a flop, what makes them think yet another remake is a good idea?

The MTA refuses to let anyone film anything that might give the subways a bad rep, so they'll probably have to film this remake just like that one: in Toronto. Pathetic...

I don't see how a remake of the warriors is even possible... it too will be a piece of turd compared to the original.

Next thing you know they'll try to remake Ft. Apache... as if you could ever recreate the destruction scenery of the south bronx circa late 70s/early 80s...

Quick! Cast Clive Owen in the Robert Shaw role and Jodie Foster as the mayor. Replace Tony Scott with Spike Lee. Oh, wait....

user-pic

"move it to Detroit" You mean have set it on the cute little people mover that motors along at 5mph? That would be awesome!

user-pic

we are going to kill one passenger a minute until new york city gives us some trans-fat donuts ...

user-pic

Would you settle for Aunt Jemima pancakes with extra powdered sugar?

"taking of the people mover" - hahaha!

The Vincent D'Onofrio/Edward James Olmos version of TKOTP123 was not very good at all. D'Onofrio just couldn't summon the menace that Robert Shaw carried of so well. That and the whole NYC in the 70's was a hell hole and this was possible just can't be recreated again as TimSPC says.

I still remember the terrific last shot of the original movie.
